The door (and a fixed glass panel) are going in as a replacement for two windows and a pillar so the steel beam is already accounted for. I was more concerned about usability of sliding doors that tall.

Karen, don't go right up to the ceiling, it will look ugly - and smaller (as your husband has pointed out). Stop just short of the ceiling, the storage capacity will not be reduced. Then add a decorative moulding on top of the wardrobes, and blank-off the tiny gap behind to avoid dust. And, as others have said, choose a paint colour which harmonises with the walls. Hoping my photo from my own bedroom may be helpful. Although it may not be obvious, the wardrobes sit within the chimney breast alcoves, and the drawers are where the fireplace would originally have been.

We're so excited you have We would like to echo some of the recommendations already made - having island and counter space nearby is incredibly important, as well as a sturdy oven with racks and oven doors which can potentially withstand weight. Richard's comment regarding elbow room is also definitely one to watch out for. We'd also recommend having your hob and extractor nearby - for example, on an island opposite your built-in ovens as shown in the image below. This helps you to transfer from hob to oven and back again, and can also help deal with the smell of cooking! Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like any further advice.
