We decorate and renovate our homes mostly for ourselves, but few people can deny that it's nice to have guests over (whether they're friends or family) who love your style and design.

What's the best compliment someone's ever paid you and your house?

Best compliment I've had was partway through our renovation, while the house was still a real tip / building site, and our builder said our place felt like a proper home.

The best compliment I have had was when I was selling my flat in London. The lady who bought it came with a friend to do some measuring and in the course of the conversation the friend said 'oh I assumed you were an interior designer' when in fact I was a harassed working mother of two! One of my proudest moments :-) The best compliment my current home has had was when I overheard a dear friend telling someone 'You should see Gerry's house, no one else has a house that looks like that, it's so creative' bless her cotton socks.

They'll never go out of style Tom - NEVER!! Haha! A10) Ohhh I love eclectic style, Maxine, and yes, I mix styles all the time in my own home! I will say, for as easy as it sounds to just throw everything you love into a space, it’s actually one of the hardest looks to do really well – that’s not to discourage you of course because when it all comes together, it’s incredibly satisfying! While it may be tempting to just include everything you like from all different styles together in one space, the resulting feeling will be one of over-stimulation and confusion. So the secret of this seamless integration requires creativity and some self-imposed boundaries. Sticking with a structured colour palette will give the room cohesiveness without making the room flat and uninteresting. Start with a neutral base for your larger pieces, your paint colours and/or your flooring as a means of grounding the space. Pay attention to how pieces relate to one another and how they relate to the room as a whole. One oversized piece is absolutely fine but 3 or 4 will make the room look cluttered and uncomfortable. Despite using mid-century hoop chairs alongside a more traditional chesterfield in my own living room, the backs of the chairs are of similar height to the low-lying sofa back. There is continuity of the eyeline and nothing jars too dramatically. You also want to ensure that when borrowing from different eras, you mix and match throughout the space – having a mid-century console table with art of the same era hanging above it and then a Victorian style fireplace with an ornate mirror in a different part of the room is going to look ‘off’. Take that artwork and hang it above the fireplace instead and perhaps use the more ornate mirror above the console table instead! Hope that helps!

The best and worst place you've ever stayed!

The worst? Missed the last train from Dublin to Belfast and booked in at the 'hotel' across the road to be sure of getting the first train in the morning. Spent the night wide awake hoping the lock would hold, and my second line of defence - a chair wedged under the door handle - would kick in if the lock gave, while a steady procession of drunks knocked the door and rattled the handle whilst promising me a night of bliss.

Hello Ocean, Well I get a lot of really good responses and interestingly I received an email yesterday from BUILD magazine saying they have spotted me and my home on here and selected me to be the "UK" Interior designer of their BUILD'S DESIGN TOP 10 in their August issue! I know it's advertising and I may not be able to see my way to it, due to it's being a tiered package accolade! Nonetheless.... WOO!! : ))

I was getting shopping delivered the other week and the tesco delivery guy seemed really shocked at how fabulous inside the house was as the outside work had not commenced and it was in pretty poor condition!
