Hi, If you use an iPad you could download the free Dulux Visualizer app to look at different colours - it's quick and easy (but lighting conditions have to be good) For a cost effective transformation I would have to agree with you and most of the comments by painting the Front door, garage doors and windows of the house. (Use a good primer/undercoat like Zinsser external - shellac or oil based) I would advise all matching colours for a uniform country home feel. The olive green or light green looks nice. For the driveway you could go resin bound which is available in a variety of colours now and lasts much longer than Tarmac with far greater osmosis. Again adding the private home country estate feel at a reasonable price. Rendering comes in various colours (although it is costly) if within your budget will totally transform the look and feel adding to the thermal insulation. And most definitely some easy care, low maintenance plants and planters... You don't have to spend mega bucks! Although probably a good time for discounted evergreens? Good luck Edward eDECO

Weekly? Oh, how I wish it were only weekly. I'm out there nearly every day culling the three-cornered leek that has reappeared as a thick blanket despite me culling it in the first spring I was here, in my new house, then finding it had reappeared hugely aggressively last year and now, in my third spring, it's even thicker and even more widespread - and is now not only in the flower beds but also in the lawn, thick along the edge, scattered within it. Front and back. It takes about two hours to clear about a square yard - digging under the bulbs; banging off the (very good, I've been told) soil in which there are always several earthworms which I need to hang on to (obviously); then picking out the tiniest bulbs left behind. I don't think I can ever finish it this year - as happened last year - which means the problem will go on for decades. I don't really have the time (I need to work, I need a life beyond digging and clearing). The only solution I can think of is to bring in help but my budget won't allow that. I value having lawn so paving it over isn't an option. I will have less planting space, which will eventually mean less weeding, but it's not something I can do right now - I've too much to do to bring the indoors up to date. I disagree with Jo DP. The previous owners had a keep it wild policy and now I have this big problem with a massively invasive plant. And, yes, I have tried using it in recipes - it really isn't worth the effort of keeping it under control (to have a limited supply). I'm an experienced and adventurous cook and three-cornered leek is an overrated ingredient, even though it's free and in my garden.

Hi Jillian Getting your brief right at the start of the job is central to its success. Your architect should be able to work with you to help tease out the detail of what you need from the spaces, what you like about it currently and what you don't, how you will use the spaces and how they will connect to the garden and the existing house, among many other things. Everything will follow from this process, and this will usually start with a really good discussion about the existing layout and what works and what doesn't. Don't try to pin the brief down too early. Use the skills that your architect should bring to the project. Architects are problem solvers and should be able to help you identify the key issues and the best ways to solve them. To get the most out of your architect you need to enter into the project with an open mind, look around and talk to a number of companies, and decide who you think you will work best with to make the most of your project. Good jobs are the result of good relationships and collaboration! Go to the RIBA website - https://www.architecture.com/working-with-an-architect/why-use-an-architect which has some useful information about working with architects. There are lots of good books out there too. I often point clients in the direction of the grand designs handbook, which is full of inspiration, but also has good information about process too. I think that because you are considering major changes to the front of a semi detached property, an architect would be your best option. The last thing I expect you want is to end up with a mish mash of styles that could be expensive to achieve and more expensive to undo if it doesn’t look right. I think it would be money well spent to get expert involved especially to advise on not only the design but whether you have to apply for planning permission. Good luck with it all.
