Our new front door!

Hello, my fiancé and I have just purchased our home in the Adelaide Hills, Australia, it is a solid double brick home but in need of a fresh, crisp look. Eventually we'll render the exterior of the house but that will not be for a while. In the meantime I thought painting the front door either white or black would be a nice fresh statement. I just can't decide which way to go. I am going to pain the inside walls within the next 6 months with a lovely fresh white/ linen to lighten the inside of the house. Any thoughts? Thanks Cheryl

Me too. Once you start on the door then there's the frame and the next frame and so on.

Is extending into the flat at the back a realistic possibility? If it is I would site your lounge and Kitchen at the back of the house which is likely where the garden is most private. If it is never going to happen there is the possibility that you might spend a lot of money and it still not be big enough for a growing family. If this is actually a shorter term home I would do the following: Front door on the front Create a big hallway Have the big bay windowed room as a kitchen/ living room Have the back room as an ensuite bedroom. Use the windowless rooms at the back to make a bathroom, utility and keep the door there for the dogs. Have a second bedroom where you were planning to put the kitchen. This plan is not as ambitious and without an extension is not as large but is should be a better layout for resale later.

Hi, Love you window above the door. Makes me think contemporary modern lights may suit. I don't disagree with Mad about the house but think that they may be a little too big and you wouldn't really want a PIR (sensor) on both if any as this may pick up people passing. The choice of course is yours but if I may suggest a couple of styles from our range that may be worth a consideration. The first is a new style and great if you want to light outside your door but not the street. It's a great price and that's always a good thing especially when you need 2. Congratulations on your home purchase! If you're going to paint the door you definitely should paint the frames too. Bright white will make the bricks and flooring look very 'dirty'. I don't see black in any of your fixed elements which will make it look like an isolated island. You have a lot of colours in the bricks and flooring - adding yet another will not be an enhancement. If you paint, pick a colour which relates to the colours you already have. Good luck.

I agree with Signature Interiors that neither black nor white seem appropriate for this doorway. White, as mentioned above makes everything else look 'dirty' but also can look dirty itself very quickly too. Black is a very dark and bold statement but will not really work with what I can see of the property so far or the other elements you have in the entrance there.

I would love to ask a lot more questions like: Do you have more photos of the exterior of the house? What colour are all the other window frames in the property? What style of interior are you going for (even if eventually)? Will you be changing the door furniture to add to the fresh statement you are trying to achieve?
