Our swimming pool needs a makeover

Kidney shape, would love paving or decking or a bit of both. Maybe a water feature (not sure about the limestone wall) and a bench seat.

A great blank canvas ! You could do allsorts. Build up the outside areas to make different height patios and sitting / eating areas? Build up the sides and have water features around the edges? Build on the limestone wall and make it look like a natural water feature? Have a 'hanging deck' area that slightly goes over the pool? I threw in the elephant water feature below for fun !

Just thought I would add a few more comments for people who are designing bathrooms now. If a person is wheelchair user go for a wall hung basin so they can get legs and w/ch under it. I chose a pedastal to support basin as my son has learning difficulties so if he leans on it, it will stay put. I also chose the glass shower screen but have now put some nice window peels across eye level. This is so it's more visual and safety aspect for him to know the screen is there. Don't go for chrome handrails unless with rubber grips as smooth surface and soap render them useless. Allow for space in the cubicle. As much as you can afford too as nothing worse than being cramped up and possibly banging elbows and head. A shower curtain is safer for some folk but remember it will be sicker in with power of shower and person inside which can be a hazard in its self. If putting shelves in shower area avoid glass and head height. These may be used by someone to lean on if not in correct area of shower so avoid putting them too far into the shower area. Use handrails / grabrails where this happens. Provide a shower seat. My son doesn't need one to shower with but he has a portable plastic shower chair to sit down and dry/dress on. I used a wall fixed soap dispenser for shampoo and shower gel. This means it doesn't matter which one he uses (can't read) but also avoids bottles on the floor. I'm an occupational therapist and thought I must share this information as every persons needs are different. If someone does need help with advice on adaptations I'm willing to help with advice. A friend is currently having a pool installed in Northern Tuscany and has opted for a very dark liner almost black. We have a pale blue liner - it looks great at night with the lights on and its easy to spot any dirt too. Depending on where you live - Spain or other locations, you might need to check with your local council to confirm if there are any issues with different coloured liners. I know in our case it had to be blue in our part of Italy. Take your time - pools are expensive so you want to get it right.

How exciting! Its funny how deep they look when there is no water in them. When you fill it with water it will seem much shallower. First on some practical points the radiator is a slight concern. What you really need is a small air handling package that is linked to the water temperature and that will ensure the air in the pool house is always a couple of degrees warmer than the water in the pool and is circulating to avoid condensation. It would be good to identify who installed the pool (There might be labels on the pool plant) and to get them in to overhaul and recommission it. You could replace the sliding doors with really good quality (Schuco) sliding folding doors so that the whole lot could be opened back on a sunny day. You could get rid of the radiator and make those windows into full height doors as well. The brick walls are a bit sad - but would be a great surface for fixing slate, stone or tile, and for the floor you could look at a non-slip ceramic porcelain large format tiles. We use Solus Ceramics. http://solusceramics.com Lighting is always tricky - if you put lights in the ceiling over the pool it can be hard to change the bulbs. We have got round this in the past by using fibre optic projector lighting (One central lamp and the light is conducted along inert glass cables to the fittings) but it is quite an expensive option, or instead uplight the ceiling using floor or wall lights. Looks like a project! You need to schedule your work and a few starting points are: Sketch out a layout Trim back hedges & replace rotting fences Remove concrete under existing shed (some could be used as hardcore under new shed depending on design) Put in base for new shed & build other landscaping Plant up beds Put in grass (artificial is a good suggestion with all those trees!) The layout will need to introduce movement, hide some areas of the garden, and put planting in the corners to blur the boundaries. Think about setting it on 45 degrees? Use evergreens such as Choisya and Osmanthus to hide areas, and possibly an evergreen Clematis armandii trained along neighbour's extension - depending on light levels. Try the sunken fire pit with raised seating made from sleepers. When planning the news, leave an 80cm wide path around the sides and back - kids love playing chase and hide and seek along these, and they also help make maintenance easier. Good luck!
