Putting white or light grey on a kitchen floor is asking for martyrdom - fine if you're what Freud called a housewife psychotic; but if mopping your floor three times a day isn't your thing, go for a darker floor and get your reflected light from the vertical surfaces of the island. I would also be wary of white next to cream - call me old-fashioned, but it's one of the few combinations that simply jars. Have you considered having a bold and bright colour for the island as a counterpoint to all that tastefully restrained grey, black and cream?

Keep the bricks, they are fine. Paint everything that is conker brown a different colour and paint the render. Replace the guttering with black. I bought a brown house and had parts of it rendered to give it a lift.

Hi Paula, I can only comment on slate, I'm afraid. Brazilian Slate is non porous, incredibly dense and attractive too. Reasonably priced and works in a traditional or contemporary setting. Excellent natural slip resistance even when wet and great for areas with heavy traffic. Cleans up very well and with a good sealer applied before and after laying, this job will be even easier (make sure to use a suitable exteror sealer) Hope you find what you need.
