Painting red brick fireplace hearth
I'm home this year on may leave and can't bear to look at my fireplace any longer. My home is traditional but my furniture is modern / mid century modern. I was thinking that an easy fix would be to paint it dark navy blue and then put fewer but larger items around the painting. Or should I paint it grey or black? My husband wants to cover it with marble but I know that will never get done and something tells me that painting it blue might make it a real focal point

Comments (8)It's an awkward one, and as the comment above mentions, one that's debated often. I'd say at the very least take out the brickwork in the alcoves, it's those that date the look the most. Comments (8)Leave the brick inside the fireplace but maybe tone it down a little. Get the rest of the brick plastered over, including the little display recesses which are very dated. Comments (4)Personally I would remove it, if budget allows. It looks very 80’s and doesn’t really have any period charm to it. If you are removing the floor tiles and redoing the floor, why leave the bricks? We had a similar fireplace in our house, but eventually removed it, opened up the fireplace and fitted a new surround. 8 years agoI think your mantel, fireplace, area rug, wall color, and painting above all work nicely with the red brick. I actually think the bricks tie in nicely with the other colors in your space and complement the other elements in your room.
I can't see painting the bricks gray, because the rug doesn't seem to have any gray in it. While I see a lot of blues in the painting, there isn't blue in the rug, so I'm not so sure about painting the bricks navy.
I really think is is quite beautiful the way it is. The red picks up the red in your rug, complements the wall color, and works nicely with the reds and blues in the painting.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI would be afraid to use navy, as your room doesn't look like it would suit and the hearth will certainly become a focal point, but much to detriment of your art or anything else in the room. What about the same color as the walls and then add a modern silver screen and tool set. Accessorize the mantle for a sleeker look as well. I think you'll have a modern/elegant and even MC look, depending on the screen you select. Enjoy your mat leave.

8 years agoCall in a granite guy and have him give you a price to install Black Absolute granite for a fireplace surround. It's four pieces of granite that will be installed over your brick. Of course they will have to remove the brick in the hearth for it to be level, or you can have the hearth granite up about 1/2" Your choice. It won't be expensive and it will look finished.
You can purchase contemporary fireplace screens from Horchow or Neiman Marcus. They're not that expensive.
