How to co-ordinate kitchen worktops and wooden flooring

We're opening up our small kitchen and dining room to make an open, welcoming space for our family and friends. We are having a pale sage painted kitchen and light oak flooring. The style is elegant Shaker! We are considering a mixture of light oak worktops with granite worktop around the sink and stove. I have two questions about the granite.

The kitchen is east-facing and the morning sun streams in beautifully. Would there be too much glare from polished granite? Has anyone used honed granite?

I prefer a warm lighter coloured granite, similar to the colour of light oak. Has anyone tried co-ordinating the colour of granite with the colour of wood in this way?

Hello Anne,

Honed would be my suggestion as I just love the finish. Get a sample or two and see what you think. With wood why not find a light whitish granite that has a wood colour grain.. That way the two compliment. You can further compliment with some wooden chopping boards and a marble piece or two... Cheese board and a pestle and mortar for example.. Both really useful pieces and lovely.. Anthropologie has the pestle and mortar and Habitat a cheese board although I use it for toast and anything that isn't acidic.. :))

Hi Anne.

You could consider a corian worktop which wouldn't have the shine in it.

ive attached an image of a green kitchen that we installed last year that has a corian worktop. Unfortunately not a wooden floor to compare with, however it will give you a general idea.

I would usually recommend a lighter worktop with wooden floor. You can add accessories like chunky chopping boards and wooden spice racks to bring everything together. I've also added an image of the same colour kitchen with a wooden worktop for comparison.

Thanks again Deirdre ... oops ... I overlooked your question about the direction! The kitchen is south facing so it should be ok. I know what you mean about grey being a cleaner look and I do love it with white but was just thinking that it may all look too stark. Having said that I do have floor space for a good sized lime green rug that I own and if I had a window blind made in the same colour then perhaps that would work. I also have 3 lime green ceramic pots/vases which I love and they could sit on the windowsill too. That would then be enough colour accent to lift it I think. Oh decisions, decisions ... :) Will post again once I'm in and have done the deed. Thanks to everyone again for your time.

I have high end expensive laminate on my floor. It wasn't much cheaper than using wood but I was talked into it as being more practical. Its been a nightmare. With wood on the floor you would drop a bowl, it would smash and you be left with a dent in the floor but that becomes part of the character of the floor. With laminate you drop a bowl it chips the glaze and tears the photo underneath and you're left with a light coloured chip in the floor which really shows up and looks rubbish. Don't go for laminate. If I could rip ours out I would but its only been down for two years and it runs underneath the kitchen cabinets. I'd go for wood or if you're worried about spills and maintenance then karndean is a good option.

Hi Cloughie, A number of my clients have wood with wood and it works well IF you choose the right woods. Since you have your floorboards in situ already I assume their colour is fixed. Whatever it is choose a work surface that contrasts with them, not blends with them. You don't want your work surface to look like your floor. If you have an oak floor choose a really dark work surface or a really light one. I think you will understand my meaning.
