A mirror wider than the mantel?

Our living room lacks cosyness and so I want to buy a second hand mantel and create a faux fire. The problem is, we had a big beautiful mirror put up and it will most definitely be wider than any mantel that we find. The mirror is just over 2m wide and am currently looking at a couple of mantels that are around 1.5m.
Will it look silly?
I would love to flip the mirror to be vertical but it weighs an absolute tonne and is secured by a big plank of wood which will ruin the wall if we change it (not to mention cost lots of money!)
Any advice would be much appreciated. The idea is the get rid of the sofa in the photo and get a smaller armchair to sit on the left hand side facing the right hand corner

The walls are F&B strong white which is an extremely pale grey.
To the right is a gigantic window. Please Ignore the horrid blind and tv as they're temporary!
Ceiling is double height as there is mezzanine level to the left

Comments (16)Hello Francesca, Think the driftwood idea would work well but I rather think that you want something a little more rugged and definitely not painted. They should be exactly as they are natural and earthy.. Also veering toward the more unusual.. These rounded ones are fabulous as they would sit nicely with the surround which is stately and needs something that will offer a dramatic frame- they have width and show off their materials nicely.... For colours you could have some mossy greens or greenish greys... stone colours etc... with some elements of darker ivy greens to compliment... Think cushions and other details here.. There are actually some other lovely elements that take this onto other areas such as table lamps and or wall lights.. With really interesting twists on the theme... Something else that would work with the textures is this mangrove chandelier.. I have a business 'upcycling' furniture - although I've been doing it for over 20 years now and recycling was hardly a thing, let alone upcycling, in those days :D - but I started out selling mirrors on Greenwich market. A friend and I would find old mirrors in junk shops (this was in the halcyon days when every high street had at least one, sadly they are few and far between now) and we would 'pimp' them and sell them. Comments (7)As an alternative you could just mirror the alcoves and have art over the fire. It may not need to be toughened then. If you want it over the mantle I'd just have a mirror rather than go the whole width of the chimney breast if that's what you meant...See MoreMirror or picture above fireplace

We've had comments that the fireplace is too big for the room and gap above should be bigger aaaaargh -a bit disappointing as a lot of money was spent. Thanks for the advice, I've taken 3 photos from the mezzanine level so hopefully you can see the room layout. It's been tricky as the other walls are taken up with doors and stairs. The fireplace idea was to create the focal point but if this isn't going to work the question is really what I put where that sofa currently is. I can't keep the sofa as the TV needs to go in the corner. (The old desk and TV won't be there, nor will the old corner cabinet you can see)
