I need help with Window designs and an exterior colour scheme

Wonder if anyonwe can help, I have to replace the windows on my house, am thinking of going for UPVC (yes I know but I'm fed up with leaky wooden ones) possibly Sash. I was wondering what colour to get them (once in they cant be changed!) so what colour windows would you get and what colour should we paint the house.? I love the idea of grey or bluey grey windows but what colour would the house need to be.?

I Replaced my old cottages windows with hardwood ones in a Georgian style, but with my own twist on it .... Might suit yours too ? ( had them made by a carpentry shop in Dorchester ) As only one window is shorter than the others - I'd be tempted to just go for all tall paired opening - with the one thinner window (top right ) to open as a single tilt type one maybe ?

Same colour as slate tiles but gloss?
Then paint the plinth along the foundation of the building too. Below the horizontal line.

Lovely house.
I like white windows with a mid shade render- blue would look smart, pink would work, grey is current and I like a sunny yellow.
I agree with the idea of a dark grey/black border at the base for practical reasons.

If you are going to use white for the window frames I suggest you install the shutters before you make your final decision on colour as glass distorts the colour slightly and most shutters are a soft white. If you put a brilliant white on the woodwork the shutters could look like they have yellowed.

This was in 2011, when we just started renovating. Top windows are new (ral7039), walls ral9010. You see the neighbour on the right has bright white, the attached on the left some creamy tan. (Landscaping credits go to previous owner..) Don't have many new photo's, but this was a few months ago, when we had the front door and livingroom window done too (pvc): Lower edge on the wall still needs some paint.. And landscaping hasn't been done yet either, but we did take out the dug in roof tiles.. (plus we're slow renovators LOL no stress)

Nice House. I think grey windows would be to dark. How about painting the house a mid shade of grey and keeping the windows white. I agree you could paint the plinth a darker shade of grey.

HI, I WOULD DEFINATELY GO FOR WHITE REPLACEMENTS ON THE WINDOWS, WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR PERIOD HOME 12 YEARS AGO WE WERE UPSET BECAUSE IT HAD UPVC WHITE WINDOWS, WE PLANNED TO CHANGE THEM, BUT 12 YEARS ON THEY ARE IMMACULATE, MAINTAINANCE FREE. HOW ABOUT FRENCH GREY FOR THE HOUSE?

Thanks for that, I think your right, I LOVE French Grey hate to admit it though as its so middle class uniform, but its great.. Now to decide, standard casement windows or Modern UPVC Sash ones...?

thanks everyone, never thought of a Dark Plinth, there is a line I could do, How dark are we talking.? tracysid thank you, yes the old windows look good, on the Back they are proper old single glazed with lovely wood work but all of the frames are rotted out and water is penatrating into the walls, damp and blown plaster isnt a good look...

The dulux app is quite good for that - or GIMP but that's a bit trickier ! You have a beautiful looking home by the way !!

OK Just resurrecting this post. What do people think about fake Georgian bar
in the windows, do I want it.? I actually hate it in these current ones but is
that because it’s the combination of wood frames and plastic fake inserts.? I
just can’t imagine how the windows would look without it. Would it look crap if
I kept the current format i.e. the large centre window remains three pieces the
others keep the two small top windows and two larger lower ones but loose the
internal fake Georgian bar. Have dummy vents with everything so it keeps the
uniformity of line.? I’m also worried
with thicker UPVc frames and Georgian bar there won’t be a lot of window
left... What does anyone think.??

It’s a nice old house so don’t want to ruin it. Windows are going to
be £15k
ish so once it’s done its done and cannot be changed, do I have to get
the vastly more expensive Cottage bar but then that might look fake as
well … HELP...

I think the current style of frame really suits your house I would lose the Georgian bar though.

I don't think your openings are the correct proportion for sash windows.
When the house was built the panes would have been small with bars between the panes.
You can get bars that have a spacer between the panes and inside/outside bars. Photo to show, mine are triple glazed (and not especially clean ;-) )

This is what I was going to have, below is what is currently fitted on part of the house but they are knackered.. Just worried with UPVC as its wider I'll have more plastic than glass.. Was going to keep the Crucifix design ie two small top and two large botttom, To bar or not to bar that is the question......

Please don't ruin such a lovely old house with plastic wIndows. I appreciate it costs more to replace in wood but maybe take it in stages. Find a local carpenter to replicate the originals, it would look totally amazing and also would increase the value and appeal of such a gorgeous house. Previous owners of my cottage in the Chilterns put in dark brown upvc windows which are totally out of keeping and make it so dark.

I have to agree with aitchmw. Think of resale - some buyers would be put off buying a period home with UPVC windows!

I have recently viewed some high end upvc sash windows that are practically indistinguishable from wood. However I would personally replicate what you already have. I think it would be a mistake to have the wider frames of the upvc and would be a further mistake to remove the georgian bar detail.

For what its worth I would also discourage you from painting your house grey. We have just painted ours grey and whilst it's trendy at the moment there is a reason why most of the houses in the UK have white or cream render. Grey can look very bleak and its also very difficult to get the right shade.

I really think you should consider timber. All WWA members have their windows tested against air and water leakage, so there won't be any problems there. They come factory-finished in any RAL colour and can be repainted (outside or inside) whenever you want. And the frames will last twice as long as plastic. I would replicate its original windows, which are beautiful. It's a handsome house - keep its value by keeping its authentic character.

Thanks all, bit of a cop out as I did go plastic, but the difference in noise, draghts etc is incredible. Just need to do the rest of the house now..

There’s such snobbiness about plastic windows. They make a home warm, cosy and draught free, and no painting! We’ve had ours since the 80’s and maintenance is so easy, just a quick wash. I still have a nice draughty wooden door though! Your house looks lovely.

I like black windows. They give the illusion of being bigger than the are, and look perfect for years. Bold choice, though, and a tougher look to pull off with light render: I did it with brick Victorian buildings, and one very modern dark grey rendered house, where the black looked great.
