Pine Skirting Colour

Hi,

Any advice on what white paint/varnish/wax we could use to paint our pine skirting/architraves, yet show off the wood grains etc? We've tried samples of Ronseal Ash White n several others but non leave the finish we require! I might just have to live with Leyland satin white paint...

Hello Raul,

The way I would do this is to make a wash so water down the paint.. I'd try with a water based eggshell and then water it down further until you get the desired result with both colour and grain. :))

Have you tried Fiddes hard wax oil or Osmo?? Both are available in tester pots from Wood finishes direct:- osmo / fiddes . Alternatively, and this is a method i favour. Find some white paint - water based only though, ( and it doesn't really matter which type as you're going to seal it any way ), water it down 50/50. Use a small sponge to wipe the paint onto the wood. Build up the layers very thinly until you get the desired effect and then seal it with clear varnish. This puts you completely in control of the coverage and is most likely to get the effect that you want specifically. Try it out on a spare piece of skirting until you know how much paint and how many layers you want.

Thanks for your suggestions so far. Here are some pictures. The wood is not original, approx 30 years old. Stained I think, rather dull now. I plan to replace the carpet, and paint the walls - the blue is very cold. Reluctant to paint the wood - too much time and effort when so many other rooms also need attention!

I vote for doing skirting and other bits you mentioned in the same colour as the wall. I’ve done the same in both my hall and bedroom and find it makes the room feel taller. I’ve also done cupboards and banisters in same colour in my hall too. Plus your eye isn’t drawn down to the floor by the white skirting against the dark room. It’s a lovely colour by the way!

Hi, No, you don't have to paint all the woodwork in the same colour. You could do, but it's definitely not necessary.

We live in the Scottish highlands, where nearly all houses, even new ones, have pine skirting, doors, doorframes etc. Fortunately ours were only treated with wax before we bought house, varnished ones seem to go very orange with time. Skirting boards alone, yes I might attempt to change, but its a far too big job for us up here, would take forever and I quite like the finish, even though our style is classic/contemporary Italian rather than cosy highland - but it just seems to work!

Hello Raul,

Use a water based eggshell which is for wood and then try on a sample wood to find the right finish you want so you can paint what you need with the same finish and consistency. And yes I too have been working with paint for the last decade! Not that time is important at all! Experience is :))

Hi Raul, Yes as per my earlier post and that of AJ Interiors, water down Eggshell paint, which is for wood, it's easier to dilute than satinwood. Or bog standard emulsion.....................................because.....................

In my opinion ( and the fact that i've been working on paint finishes for the last decade ), as you are changing the consistency of the paint and using it as a non standard application, ie you are not priming the wood and using it as a topcoat. You are using it as a wash. Thus, I would still seal the wood afterwards as i mentioned before with a clear varnish either matt or satin, to your preference. Skirting's need to be hard wearing and if you water down the paint & only put on a light coat, the wood will still be porous, thus making it mark easily and become un-washable.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I wasn't sure of what water based eggshell paint was... Think I'll give this a go. Any preference on brand for eggshell n clear varnish? Something average on price as I'm on a budget please...

Btw - the eggshell mixed with water works! Still experimenting on mixture ratio but it's definitely a solution! Thanks
