Mixing metals: chrome tapware and hardware with brass ironmongery?

Hello

I am fully renovating my tiny 1 bed flat. It's in a period building and I want it to look modern, but not too modern!...

All the tapware is chrome (so silver in colour) and I need to now choose what colour the - door handles

- hinges and

- ironmongery on period sash windows should be....

Can I mix brass and chrome together? Or should I get chrome for everything?....I am worried that chrome will be too modern and I would like to bring in some gold/brass elements like metal plant pots or light fittings etc...

Personally I'd keep it really simple and light. Paint the upper cabinets to tone with the tiles, or think about replacing the doors with glazed ones—more practical than open shelving, but a similar spacious look. If you were feeling really adventurous you could paper the back of them with mirror leaf/silver leaf for a reflective glow that would also open out the space further. I like the idea of painting the lower doors charcoal (or a warmer grey if you prefer), your room looks very bright so it can take it. A vibrant long rectangular image along the end wall to visually widen the space, characterful rugs and some cheerful kitchen paraphernalia/flowers and I think you'd have a lovely space! You're very lucky, it's really just tweaking.

It's better to use the same everywhere but you could also have one type downstairs and another one upstairs for instance. as long as you cannot see 2 different handles at the same time, it works. I would choose the finish depending on what you have around for cupboard, lighting,... and stick to it (if your cupboard handles are polished brass go for polished brass everywhere). One thing to look for is to get sprung handles so it is not only the lock getting your handle back up. I use Hafele for my ironmongery and I have never been disappointed.

So you know I bought a single 'click deco' brand dolly light switch a while back and found it to be pretty poor quality so it was returned. Ended up with these: http://www.forbesandlomax.com/the-unlacquered-brass-range.html Really good quality and they have lovely finishes too. I quite like their antique bronze range too as it contrasts nicely with chrome/nickel finishes without clashing. If you'd really like everything to match then take a look at the Jim Lawrence range. They're not the cheapest but offer both light switches and door furniture in a large selection of finishes. I took your advice @alyson38 , @Fran and @Raumtastik and here is how it looks so far. I havent finished painting walls which will be SW Alabaster. I am currently trying to decide if I should do open shelving on either side of the kitchen window (I put some blue painter's tape where it would go) or some blinds (in natural wood looking woven linen, bamboo). It needs something there as it looks kinna blah.
