Flower question

Lovely! I'm in the U.S. and have never seen that striking orange flower with the tiny spheres of green on the stem. May I please know its name and a little about it?

The plant is called Leonotis leonurus, and its common name is Lions Ears. We cut it back twice a year. It grows about 2m x 2m. It is reasonably drought-tolerant. It's a great plant!

I don't mind the current colours although a greys and beiges tend to suck light out of a room, a brighter colour rather than just white will help. I agree with much of what Jill says above, with a few tweaks ... the lighting needs attention. The room needs some interest, colour and texture to create depth. Get a larger rug, more colourful, with organic pattern which draws the eye outward. Big enough to sit the furniture on. Pick up some of the colours from the new rug and get some cushions. A couple of plants would help with texture and add life to the room. I know you are using the mirrors to add light and space but the one under the stairs is just reflecting the underneath of the stairs ... try a colourful print of a pathway between trees for example, to draw the eye beyond the room otherwise it's a bit bland. The TV is just on a stand that is too small and a bit low, go for a wider piece or try positioning the unit against the other wall in that same corner so it is facing the sofas, then the TV won't look so out of balance. If you make the room a bit livelier and interesting the light issue won't be such a problem. Consider pale turquoise walls for example rather than just white and add some artwork.

Big thanks tamp75. I really like your idea of RAL 9007 for garage door (standard product) and Sadolin "volcanic ash" for the window frames. Hadn't thought of that! And I think you might be right about the weathering of the "traditional" shade of Marshalls driveway products. Have been noticing this as a pass local front gardens. Anyone have any ideas for a warm/soft white shade for the exterior wall? A mum at school suggested RAL 9010 - she said that was the advice her sister (an architect) had given her on her house (she was doing the interiors). Any views?

Hi Katherine, It sounds like a great space that can offer a real impact and still be a very cosy and relaxing space. It can be daunting to have such a large space to deal with at first, especially when there are features you don't want to touch. There are lots of different options for the space. I like the idea of opening up the fireplace as it would make a great feature for the room and a place to add a possible seating area for reading but I do agree that if down stairs is electric it is probably closed off. It is a bit of work and a messy job to get it changed. You shouldn't need to worry about planning but will obviously need to abide by building regulations. I think a lot of people place only a large bed and a select few piece of furniture in there types of rooms to draw attention and emphasis the gorgeous period features but there of course things we can do to add additional wardrobes in unobtrusive ways. I would agree to not adding a en-suit as it will unbalance the space. However, it is very hard to tell without any pictures? Would you be able to upload any? @Joanne Evans thank you! i would love to be able to make it that wide but we don’t have a huge garden and need to leave space for the boys to play. I will hopefully dig another small bed on the other side of the garden once I know i have done this one right. I am content with small plants and flowers, I just need flowers And plants Which can survive footballs etc!! I will google for a soil probe- will any do the job?
