Kid's bedroom decor - your choice or theirs?

When it comes to children deciding on their own bedroom layout and decor, lets just say, sometimes ideas can be a little adventurous!

For those who are in the process of renovating, it can be a little daunting to let the kids have free rein over the design/theme of their bedrooms.

Do you think it's important to involve the little ones or is this something which should be left to the adults? Share your stories in the comments below!

In our experience, and we mainly specialize in Kids Rooms, most important part comes to parents. The smaller your child is- the bigger part you play in it. But as they grow, they eventually make their own decisions. So it is up to you to make your decisions look like it is their own :)

There are many ways to incorporate so much loved cartoon characters to room design not making it 'cheap' looking. You still have to listen to your child.

Hello Ocean,

I definitely think it should be something that is decided between parent and child and designer if there is one.... Especially if you want a themed room and or something that allows a child's creativity.. I would always want to create something that is either interactive in some way and or something that fuels the imagination... I think the first thing I'd be doing is sitting down with said "little client" and discussing what the favourite or inspiring thing is.. and working out from that where the vision lies...

Having a really creative and imaginative mind is half way there.. Being able to meet your clients view point is more than being.. pint sized! : ))

I agree - children's imagination and creativity can be so inspiring at a young age. It would be a shame to waste that! A little bit of moderation over the design phase may be necessary, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end!

Hi. I don't know what colour the wardrobes and bed are but I would decorate in shades of pale taupe or greige with blush pink with white. You can also get canopies for beds which look equally good in adult bedrooms. For wall art maybe ballerina or ballet pumps? There are lots of grown up versions around that should also appeal to your daughter. A chandelier style light and love the fairy light idea perhaps around the dressing table? If there's room perhaps also a small rug that you can remove for when guests stay so your daughter can have her bedding, cushions, soft toys and rug to make it more child like.

Love your bedroom Patrina, gorgeous:) Agree with previous comment, it’ll be difficult to match bedding colour. Or maybe you could turn the fabric you have now into a bed runner?

That's a tricky one! you could paint his bed or chest of drawers, wardrobe etc in red and white, the first pic is just giving an idea of something red and white in a space themed room rather than the rocket although it is very nice! You can also get rocket decals and you could add the face of his favourite player in the rocket. Or alternatively I quite like the idea of a moon decal and you can then add a footballer decal ( this one is from beautifulgame.co.uk) and position the player so he's kicking the ball over the moon ( I would probably add just the player rather than the arsenal badge etc). You can also get a red and white football beanbag, this one isn't too obviously football but you may have enough red and white in the room by that stage anyway! Maybe if he wants more arsenal themed bits suggest adding to the inside of the wardrobe door :)

Hello Ocean,

I rather meant that creativity and imagination isn't limited to your childhood but rather when designing for a child it pays to be able to think like one..... Einstein had a few quotes about imagination.. and so here's one of mine..

" Knowledge is limiting but imagination knows no bounds"...

One of my favourite tools when designing for anyone at any age.. is using my imagination.. : ))

Amy, you know the old saying that they are arrows from your bow? It means that they are little individuals and you will have to eventually let them go.

so get their ideas as a jumping off point. Then you can teach them good design going on from that inspiration. I had one child into space age modern, and the other into antiques. Plenty of scope there.

I had this with my daughter. She adores all things pink, well cerise, and I am more muted. She also has a crazy imagination which I didn't want to dash. We did a mood board which was something I had never done as not a designer. It was really good fun and we worked out a "theme" so not chaotic and had structure. It was also fun her pretending to be a designer and explain what she liked and why as we looked on the website and in shops.

TribbleTrouble.. He can individualise his own house!!!

thankfully he's only 7 months so I can still make these decisions for him.

I actually think they should be able to guide the design process, if he's into minimalism I'm not going to suddenly shop at idea for high gloss white but we could go with a modern scandi vibe. Plus, if they hate their room they might invade the common spaces more.

Amy, he can , and should have choices in his own room. It is his sanctuary when things are not going well for him. You are talking about eighteen years of his life. That's a long time.

The kids should have their choices on it, but most of all they should be very well interpreted by the designer.
