In the grand scheme of things the difference in the acquisition cost is probably not so bad as more of the cost of laying the patio will be labour. You should check that the installation costs don’t vary too much. There is lots of conflicting advice about sealing stone so you may decide not to do it and save the maintenance - those against sealers point to Roman ruins and say that 2000 years later the stone still looks pretty good without sealer! If the objective is to have a seamless finish between the inside and out then you should go for the porcelain- stone changes colour in the wet and oven the first few years iron will rise to the surface of the stone giving it a brown quality that will be more noticeable when wet.

Hello Ataka, If you are after a hard wearing material that doesn't require sealing, then I would stay away from sandstone, as it's more porous and more brittle than granite. Regarding the slip resistance, you can get granite with a textured face finish, such as brushed or flamed and brushed (I wouldn't recommend flamed only, as it's as rough as sandpaper for the first few years). For the colour choice, some granite come in brown and black colours, which will be softened and lightened once the textured finish is applied. If you are after some cost-effective options, I would choose a standard black granite from India or Zimbabwe, but if you want to splash out a bit more money for a more impressive effect, then I would pick something different with a bit of character, such as Prada Gold or similar ones Hope this helps!

Thank you so much guys for your responses, I was really upset yesterday! But then I went out to have another look at the slabs (and managed to move two out of the way to see the third one) and that one was less grey and more... rust coloured? So I think it is a case of the top two were extra grey. In the online pictures the colour seems vastly buff with sections of grey, but the top two slabs were all grey :/ I'm sure I can return them (would need to find the receipt) but what stops me is the builder is coming on Monday (and I just want this patio already - you know how fickle the sunshine is here haha and I feel like I've wasted so much sun already :D ) but also because the york gold colour (that I think I want) I'd also be buying sight unseen so...... ugh! Lol However, I'm coming around to this colour :) and you're both right, a nice grey can be really nice! I need to stop second guessing all the decisions I spent months making, and triple checking and just let it all progress now, I do belive it's those super last min nerves getting to me! I will breath :)

I’m such a fan of sandstone. It can have a rustic look which I love, but not everyone does, so you can buy honed sandstone which is smooth with very straight edges and modern. Mine is textured and has a rustic cottage look. It comes in several natural shades such as grey, or buff, or a mixture. I bought mine from Global Stone Paving via a local builders merchant. You can also get setts in sandstone to edge a patio which is rather nice. Also clay pavers are lovely for edging a path or patio. Have a look at Global Stone’s website. If you wanted a very modern look then Porcelain outdoor paving may suit you. Again Global Stone sell it, but so do many other companies. Here’s a pic or two. The first is the sandstone in my garden. The red brick circle is clay pavers. The second is porcelain. The third is a darker grey standstone.
