Sustainable for whom?

Are you aware of the value of the minerals in those deer antlers to the soil in the fields where they fell off? In BLM territory, it's a crime to remove those antlers from the field where they dropped. Since people who do not educate themselves on this take them, Rangers now pick them up, grind the antlers down into dust, and sprinkle that where the antlers were found. The Atts& Crafts Movement was in part about being in harmony with our environment. Can that be expressed in the design by not robbing the environment of what it needs to harmonize?

Wow, Erika! So grateful for your insight here. I researched sourcing the antlers in the light of finding a solution that didn't involve killing deer or some form of poaching. I'll check our records for what state of ignorance we were all in at the time of the purchase. Perhaps laws have progressed since then. Whether or not my vendors were operating within compliance, I am at least better informed now due to this enlightenment. Thanks!

Thanks for being gracious. The issue is not killing deer, it's that the antlers are actually an important part of the ecosystem where they naturally land. The creatures and the soil in the fields where the antlers fall off need the minerals and other nutrients in the antlers. It sounds ridiculous but, if you check the facts with a biologist, a naturalist, or a Native person like the one pictured over the mantle in he room with the antlers, they will confirm the importance. Anyway, your Craftsman home design is brilliant and inspiring. Thanks for responding and for sharing the gorgeously planned and executed design!

Hi all I'm Carolyn from Brampton, Ontario. It's nice to read the bios and meet everyone who is so committed to décor and design. I studied Interior Decorating at Sheridan College about 30 years ago - yikes, I think I was 10 - a real prodigy :-) Kidding aside, it's a wonderful time to be in this field with all of the new technology, resources and product available to us. Like Keitha I started when my children were small. I remember having to design and water colour render a 2500 square foot house for our final project and now it's almost all done on the computer. A "Diva" I'm not. For me my job is about helping my clients create spaces that reflect them, who they are, where they have been and how they live. Helping them to define what they want and show them how to achieve it. The process is a collaboration and usually involves a team of contractors, trades and suppliers who all value the same commitment to providing exceptional, professional and timely service, whether it be a small or large budget. I guess it stands to reason that since my second passion is cooking my favourite spaces to design are kitchens. Creating a kitchen that not only looks good, but works and is a pleasure to be in is a great sense of accomplishment. I don't profess to know everything there is about design but I do know where to find the answers and am definitely a pit bull when it comes to a challenge. Not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse, but my mind doesn't stop exploring the possibilities until we find the best possible solution. It's definitely a profession where you are always learning, revaluating, exploring new possibilities and ideas and growing. I feel privileged to have worked with so many wonderful people over the years, as clients and associates and have made many lifelong friends through the process. My clients range from Baby Boomers who are downsizing and starting on a new path in their lives to young urban professionals who are just starting their lives and families. I look forward to learning and seeing all of the new projects here on Houzz and wish you all well. I'd also like to thank OnePlan for starting the post. It's a pleasure to meet so many like minded people.

Me again! Can we also have a reader's how to section. Such as a designer showing in pictures how to stage a sideboard with bijouterie depending on style, or how to style a bedroom with accents, or even articles on how to achieve X,Y,Z on a budget (I'm sure Houzzer's will have an idea - maybe this could be a section in itself?) Articles on colour or pattern matching etc would appeal vastly methinks. Even simple things that can easily be found on an internet search such as how to prep bannisters for painting would give a more magazine feel. Also a regional links page for cateogries. These could accompany articles. For eg. an article on prepping with images and step by step along with a list of Houzz recommended companies regionally who could undertake the work or fix a botched job! Topics I would be interested in include: How to add value to your home, how to maximise light, how to achieve a professional finish decorating; interior design ideas; how to change the facade of a property; flowers for the garen, door way, flowers for shaded areas, climbers for shaded areas, scented plants, how to ensure colour in the garden all year round etc. Decorating/furnishing ideas to create optical illusions to create size/light etc. Thanks for asking. I love this site and literlly spend hours getting lost on it with a cup of coffee :-)

There's nothing he likes more than a floor plan… loves them, so he does! Chablis vs Cannes. Aesthetically? Phewee… that's like asking which is your favourite child. We don't think an answer exists. They are both, honestly and truly magnificent beasts and we'd be very happy to have either in our homes. Sorry Simone but we couldn't say and it really, truly boils down to personal taste. Young family, eh. Hhmm… well, ITC state Cannes to be "durable and stain resistant." No mention about Chablis, whether it is or isn't. Click here to view their Cannes page and here to view their Chablis page. As we get into the details we can establish this for you. If stain resistant, then you would need to react quickly on any spills/drops. Each contaminant will have different ways to be treated. If liquid, always take a damp cloth and "dab" excess liquids away, never rub. Then, if a stain remains, it could be possible to remove with some of our Stain Remover although it would be a good idea to test the spray on off cuts to see if it has an adverse effect on the colour and pile. Probably won't but you ought to test beforehand… forewarned is forearmed! Threatening the youngsters with four weeks exile in the garage with nothing but lentil soup may be a good initial deterrent. Spillage and potential staining is one of life's greatest unanswered questions. Quick reaction, no matter what the yarn, is always the best piece of advice you can receive. Jump on a spill quickly and you are in with a chance of removing. Leave it over several hours and you are playing Russian Roulette with your beautiful carpet. Red wine, beetroot, ink, blood and make up are probably the greatest offenders. If you can work out a way of banishing these from your carpeted areas you'll be rid of this tyranny! Hi Sarah, Huge rug under dining table - big yes! As I mentioned before, just make sure it it doesn't have a deep pile and is fairly easy to clean / hoover. This will break up the black considerably! The rug size needs to be big enough to pull all your chairs out and they still sit on the rug - that's the minimum right size. Just a thought about finding the right paint colour for your walls and cabinets to brighten everything up. When my family took a trip down to cornwall, we stayed in this lovely cottage in the country-side. The cottage had small little deep windows, so didn't get much light in. However the cottage was so bright, warm & crisp. It had been painted a white that really really worked - white can be tricky to get right. So I called the owners of the cottage to see if they had a paint can laying around so I could find out the exact colour. It was straight Brilliant White - standard paint you can get for kitchens, walls, ceilings, masonry, etc in whatever finish you need (matt, sheen, semi-gloss or gloss). I've used it a couple of times sinse to freshen up or update an area, to make small spaces pop, or just to bring a whole space that crisp - perfect white look to show off art and objects (it is one of the few whites that can do so well as art and objects usually look dull or get lost with a plain white background). This might help with your project as it is the best paint for reflecting light and brightening your areas - but it is bright - so you will have to do a test area to see if it is too bright for you, in which case go with a white toned down from that. Think the rug(s) & the paint colour change of walls & cabinets will work the best for you since you've spent a lot on your interior already and your husband likes it as is - it is hard to justify large costs when your partner thinks it is great and you've already spent a lot..
