So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

I hope you don't mind me saying but I think with your current budget, assuming this also includes the boiler, flooring, bathroom etc, you may be a bit limited in what you can do. Longer term I would create a bigger conservatory or extension. For now, I would remove the dining room wall (assume this is non-load bearing) and the loo and porch (but you'd need to check building regs for porch). I'd have the same layout kitchen but taking it to the conservatory wall and extending slightly on the right (if you want to keep lounge door). Personally I'd close off the lounge for sofa arrangement. Consider maybe a round dining table that sits where the existing kitchen/dining wall is and have pretty much most of the dining room as a play area. You can either put seating in the conservatory or the kids can also use this. If the shower room is big enough Id just add the WM (again need to check regs). Although you don't need a separate shower now you may well do in the future? If the WM doesn't fit, then remove the shower and keep the loo and sink. I think if you shop around you should be able to do a new kitchen, bathroom, utility, flooring, boiler and decorating within budget but extending space may be a phase 2. Get a local fitter or builder for kitchen and try howdens or ikea for the actual units. City plumbing are good for reasonably priced but quality bathrooms and I've heard good feed back re Victoria plumb.

We have just had our kitchen from DIY kitchens fitted. I am genuinely impressed with the quality and attention to detail. Our builder and carpenter also commented on how good the quality is. No one can believe how little we paid for all of the cabinetry, it in no way looks 'diy' or like a budget option. It's a bit of a daunting process as they do not have designers, you have to order each component yourself online. They will however, check your order thoroughly against your plan if you send it to them. They highlighted a corner post and end panel that I had missed on my order. Everyone we spoke to at DIY was super friendly and could answer any question we had related to the product. There is a large showroom which is apparently worth a visit, but too far away for us.....so we took a leap of faith and ordered having never seen the product in the flesh....we shouldn't have worried, it looks great. It's worth saying I did also try a couple of small local firms as lots of people experience getting great deals from independents, it was not the case for us, they were still pretty expensive, but this may depend on the region and perhaps I just chose badly? Take a look at the diy kitchens website, on the right hand side is a link to customer kitchens, where customers have sent in photos of their kitchens once fitted. This gave me confidence as you could see achievable results in real homes rather than the result of glossy marketing shoots....there are some really stunning customer kitchens!

The Hue system seems to have limitless possibilities! "Philips Hue is your personal wireless lighting system that lets you easily control your light and create the right ambience for every moment." With a wide product range from starter kits, bulbs, light strips, spots, recessed, lamps, indoor and outdoor, controls and even portables you configure and customise the lighting system to suit your needs. What's more, as the bulbs work with any standard light socket (wall, ceiling or lamp) you won't necessarily need an electrician, keeping you fully in control. The technology enables you to control the lights with the Philips Hue app and third-party apps. You can even connect this lighting system to iPhone/iPad Siri voice controls, your Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit for a truly automated experience. With this app you are able to set up lights, name rooms and set controls. Other third-party apps will work with this system however you have to start here first. There are many physical and online shops where you can purchase starter kits and components however a good place to start is the Philips Hue site where prices range from £19.99 for a dimmer switch, £129.99 for an ambient white bulb starter kit through to £499.99 for a ceiling light. A simple search will highlight a range of prices from the best known online stores. Once the bulbs are installed, the bridge attached to the hub and everything connected via the app, then the fun can start! Home Automation If you already have a home automation such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit you can use voice controls to change your lights bringing a little bit of the future to your present day! If it's more than a simple "Alexa switch the lights on" command this may need a little bit of patience to set up. Using the camera on your phone or tablet and a third-party app such as Hue Camera for Philips Hue (Apple), hueDynamic (Windows), or Hue Matcher (Android) and your lights will synchronise to meet the ambience of whatever you are watching. If for instance, you are plunging into the depths of the Indian Ocean with Sir David Attenborough in The Blue Planet your app will choose the right shade of blue to enhance your viewing. What's more, when tension mounts your lights will change to help intensify the moment! It is even possible to control your ambient lighting when viewing off-screen photographs and paintings. Simply download your preferred app, run through the settings, and position your phone or tablet towards the screen or image. If you're having a party or are simply immersing yourself in your sound apps such as Ambify or Hue Disco use algorithms to work seamlessly with your music. You can also create colour themes for different genres. Without delay, working in time with your music your lights will change to the beat of your tunes! With Ambify there is an app for your Mac enabling you to play music via iTunes, Spotify, Tidal or other streaming services through to your speakers. Alternatives Of course the Philips Hue system is not the only one on the market. Popular alternatives include: LIFX IKEA Tradfri - compatible with Philips Hue system MiLight Lighting EVER With price variations for starter kits and components it really is worth doing a little bit of your own research to find a system which best suits your needs. However, in our own research Philips Hue stands head and shoulders above the others and we can't wait to introduce it more into our own designs!
