Do I need window treatments?

I like the look without window treatments but does it look too bare and unfinished?

Hi Sarah :)

I have a couple of thoughts... first regarding your window treatment question... Function first then form... do you need privacy or light control on that window? if so, the answer is clearly yes, you need window treatments. If not, then it's totally up to you and your eye for treatments... it has a nice open feel now, more of a minimalist feel.

The 2nd thought I had was if it would make more sense in your furniture arrangement to trade the sofa and chaise with each other. I can't totally see the chaise in the picture, but it looks like it's asymmetrical which would be perfect for sitting in front of the window in an asymmetrical position, like how the sofa is currently. (in other words, I don't care for the sofa sitting off center like that, but so close to the window. ;) )

Looks like a cute space... love the white!

Lovely windows with a nice view. No need for window treatments unless people hate the dark holes at night. What do YOU want?

Yes I agree and these days you can buy a reasonably priced extractor that doesn't sound like there's a DC10 in the room. Just in passing, have you thought of having a quadrant shower? You could then move the loo to the right hand wall and have a centred washstand on the left. We did something similar in a tiny shower room in a Victorian cottage - to give you an idea, see our Houzz page for more pictures.

A slight daring suggestion I have would be to paint on the windows themselves with a very thin layer of watered down acrylic paint or liquid chalk that will dry and begin to make a stained glass window effect as the window is rather small to work with but can become a bit of a feature. It may even add a splash of colour.

Hi Pauline the best and only solution for black out is to install blackout lined curtains. Silent Gliss Wave tracks will look good but are expensive and the stack back ( when the curtains are open ) is not as efficient as with other heading styles. The most cost effective hanging system is for a standard track with inverted pleat heading. Other hanging system which is much more cost effective is Distinction pole which is neat and contemporary looking. Dont be tempted with any sort of blinds on these types of windows. Roller blinds will become unbalanced very quickly with the air movement with the door open; you get scuff / dirt marks on the base of the blind when it is down; roman blinds will be huge expanses of flat fabric, slow to lift up and with a big stack at the top. Any other cassette style blinds work ok on smaller windows but will spoil the effect in this room with loads of quite large casing to fit them into. Look at www.pretavivre.com for some ideas for curtains on large windows.

Thanks for your thoughts! I will try and move around the couch and chaise when my hubby comes home; great idea. Like I said I do like the look and I'm lucky that it is very private.

We have a private backyard and only use window treatments in the back of the hosue for light control when needed (those windows face east, so really just in morning). We have cellular shades on the windows for that purpose, and at the moment no other window treatments on any of those windows. Used to have balloon shade over the cellular in our FR (which is a large window similar to yours), only becuase we kept the previous owner's, but we recently took it down. Might eventually put something up to soften the window but I like the light that comes in so it will be minimal, maybe a swag or something. If you don't need the window covering for light control or privacy, I think it is fine to leave it as is!
