Hardwood floor is black after rug removed

I took up an 8x10 rug after 3 years and the hardwood floor underneath has black marks all over. How can I get this off? Sending a picture

You're not getting it off. The tannic acid in the wood has turned it dark permanently.

Hi -it depends what is meant by black marks and the type of hardwood. It the overall floor has darkened and the hardwood is Oak then Joseph is right. Oak has a tannin within it, when overtime, will darken the oak. It the 'marks' are spotty or random, it may be something else. Need the photo really.

Always a no to fake grass from me. it would cheapen the effect you have created so much. It always looks tacky. Some more plants would look great. Evergreen agapanthus would give year round green with beautiful spikes of purple flowers in the summer 😊

Thank you so much for all of your comments. OnePlan, you said what I fear (and what my mother would tell me!!) - the aesthetics of floorboards may be nice but the practicalities, not so much. I definitely think people are more likely to complain about being unable to sleep due to kitchen noise than the way a carpet looks!! I didn't know you could get a sound-reducing underlay so thank you for the suggestion, and to CreatePerfect for the link - that product looks great! Yes, I had thought that hard flooring would be easier to maintain as well as looking attractive (but perhaps that's more a case of new hardwood floors rather than existing floorboards??) Stephen, it's a good question. What concerns me is that in the sitting room (on the ground floor) I've discovered that the floorboards are the original Victorian ones and it looks like they stretch right across the house, under the internal walls, and I guess it'll be the same on the first floor. If so, presumably taking them up would involve sawing them at the walls, rather than just prising up, which would be very destructive... I could be wrong though, I've never done anything like this before and am learning as I go!!

Hello! It’s arrived but is being fitted Monday :0) The colour wasn’t quite what I wanted as although it’s not supposed to have any blue in it, if can look blue in some lights. I don’t mind it looking deep navy but sometimes it looks lighter. Will see when it’s all up though as with the worktop on the island and overhang, it will probably just look more black! Bear in mind the company didn’t use actually F&B paints as they mix their own. Definately advises paying for a test door first as they got the colour totally wrong at first (was bright blue!) and it was hard work getting the manufacturers to check it and do it again. They almost didn’t.
