7 years agoHi Hattie, I agree with man About The House, as long as there is a bath somewhere. The family bathroom can stand out with an amazing design, make the shower as large as you possibly can. I would go for a walk-in rather than shut it off with an enclosure as it helps maintain a sense of space.
(Imagine the bath isn't in the pic!)...the shower enclosure is 1mx1.5m but with minimal screening it disappears into the design of the room.

Comments (34)I've enjoyed this in a holiday let (NorthWest Georgia, USA) as part of the very rustic charming cabin decor - the bath was a reproduction Victorian hip bath set in front of a rather large fireplace. It felt and looked wonderful. But water did splash beyond the slate tiling no matter how careful we were and our hostess told us they were seriously considering either adding a 3" lip all the way around the tiled area, or removing the bath completely. Comments (9)Our main bathroom is downstairs with just a bath (was a bungalow) until we converted the loft and we now have 2 en-suites upstairs with showers so not quite the same situation as yours but we also puzzled for a while about whether to have a shower downstairs with the bath. I def didn’t want a shower over our free-standing bath & we could have put a separate shower in but it would have been a squeeze & ruined the ‘spa’ look that we wanted to try to achieve. So we decided to have a just the bath downstairs but do have a shower head on the taps which is useful for hair washing. We have 2 teenage ch who each have an en-suite with shower but to be honest they prefer to shower in the evening anyway so mornings aren’t a problem for us. To be honest, I’m sure most people over a certain age grew up in one bathroom homes & we all managed fine. Comments (2)Any advice appreciated on how to proceed. I'm renovating the whole bathroom and wanted s freestanding rolltop bath with shower screen that sits flush to the wall. The toilet however has a large soil pipe going in the direction of the current bath so this would be on show. If I was to move the bath and toilet around, would I be able to fix a shower screen and Is there room for the sink? I'd love the freestanding bath as that's the look I'm after. Any ideas?...See More

7 years agoThe comments above are helpful. As a generalisation, I would add that a family home retains its bath for young children (and, indeed young grandchildren); most adults opt for a shower these days. So great that you have a bath somewhere, albeit any young children would need to walk through the bedroom to get to it. Depending on how big your bathroom is actually, and your budget, we had a similar challenge and fitted a shower space with hinged shower door in a wet room style design so that the family bathroom had both bath and shower. The hinged door opens up the floor space and prevents the room being sprayed; in fact only the bath itself gets wet, and even then not significantly. This may be of interest. The room footprint in this case was 1.9m by 2.1m. Other things to consider include opening the bathroom door outwards to create better use of the floor space you have. We also moved the door in this case to fit the sink comfortably, and fitted a small bath (which is fine for children). Hope this helps in some way.
