Solution for trip hazard patio

We had our patio done a few years back. It was so badly done & costed quite a bit. I wanted to just concrete over it to leave a smooth finish but my husband hated the idea. Does anyone have any idea what we can do to it that doesn't require it being removed? Thanks!

I think lots of people would love this patio and I suspect the flags have a salvage value.
But if you do just want to cover it over then consider a resin finish. An internet search for resin driveways and patios will give you lots of inspiration and show you it is available in many different finishes.

is it really a trip hazard? it doesn't seem it would be, judging by the picture. I'd leave it were I you, but if not, remove, unfortunately

I wish it were that simple! Unfortunately this was done when the extension was built about 20 years ago waaaay before we bought the place. I believe it's something to do with the way the ground slopes down towards the street - I think the drains are too close to the surface to go any lower with the floor so perhaps that's why they did it. Either way we are stuck with it so need to make the best of a bad situation! Have attached a picture to the main post now so you can see the issue. Thanks!

We tried to come up with a pergola that doubled as a swing. what we found is that to take a proper swing (rather than a baby swing as per your picture) the pergola needs to be very strong, and for safety a very long way from any wall or any structure they could fall on. Kids of 4+ can really get going on a swing! In your scenario I would be worried about the swing above a raised paved area and especially above the raised white beds. Kids do daft things on swings and if they jump or fall it could be nasty. Plus it may be a bit too close to the back wall. I have seen some swing frames which are just a simple arch - thick wood beams or painted steel can be used for the arch. Would you consider this? For example an archway between the back wall of the house and the right hand side of your circular area could work and would be quite discreet from the house. You could even put fake grass in that area of the garden.

I think that two travel posters above the sofa would be lovely. Yes, I meant your sideboard. I'm Dutch and you people have so many different words for different storage things, that I often can't think of the right one :-D I've tought my English speaking friends the Dutch word: kast. And then we just say keukenkast (kitchen kast), kledingkast (clothes kast), ladekast (drawer kast), etc. Much simpler! ;-) Anyway... shame that it's too deep for that long wall. Don't you think a shelving unit on that wall would look really busy? I'm not sure, can't really visualise it. But if you like the idea, it's your home so you should go for it. The wall definitely needs something. Maybe someone else here has a great idea for it And I think that some lighter coloured cushions and/or a light coloured throw of the arm of the leather sofa will really liven it up. Even grey or beige ones (doesn't have to be orange or pink or blue or whatever), maybe a graphic pattern or a texture, will make a difference.

I would jet wash it and have the joints raked out and re-pointed, it would then look lovely.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will jet wash it to give it a clean but unfortunately it is very uneven. The photo makes it look so nice but it really is quite dangerous.... Jonathan, thanks for your suggestion of the resin finish. I haven't heard of it and I really like the idea. As the area is quite large I think it would cost a lot to have it rectified so I best start saving!
