Patio edging

I'm interested in the edging around the patio and how u ensure that soil doesn't creep onto the patio stones?

Also, when u lay hardcore under the slabs, do u make sure there is none where the flower border is?

With this particular project didn’t
use edging due to budget restrictions of our clients. However we would recommend either a metal retaining
edge such as EXCEL edge or black plastic edging if you wanted to ensure the soil doesn't creep over!

To answer your other question, yes we do make sure of that! You need a minimum
of 400ml of top soil in which to plant shrubs and herbaceous plants, and a greater depth for certain types of trees.

I think the idea of a border next to the raised patio would look better than a fence or railings, partly because I don't think a fence would be a nice view from your patio doors. I would have railings to the side of the steps only, perhaps simple cast iron. Sandy Dann, to make sure I am understanding this properly, are you saying that the tank will actually be beneath the level of the grass it is currently sitting on, with a turret probably 150-250mm (6 to 10 inches) high or thereabouts showing above the ground? If only grass is allowed around it then how will the flower bed idea work? You may find it difficult to get enough height to screen it when reasonably close unless AJ Interior's method of putting temporary structures directly over it is allowed. Would shrubs in moveable tubs or troughs fit the bill? They should be able to give you sufficient height and width. You could choose shrubs for colourful flowers or berries, or for varied foliage colour and variegation. Alternatively, a trough-borne "living wall" arrangement? It would also be possible to set the whole garden in such a way that the turret is screened from various angles but at greater distances if the design can ensure the normal flow of people is kept far enough away from it. The picture at least gives the impression that idea may be feasible.

Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? 40cm is too much for a safe and comfortable step. It would be useful if you could add some measurements to the sketch and where does the path on the left go? You could possibly get away with raising the patio 20cm. I don't think raised beds are necessary but it is difficult to tell levels. etc. from your sketch. You may need a decking skirt or something to cover the raised patio edges, such as a brick plinth.
