What is best distance between worksurface and bottom of wall cabinets

450 cm good for my height but doesnt line up with top of high oven unit at right angles, 500 cm probably better aesthically, and does line up. Help!

I think you mean 450 or 500 mm. The system of mm versus cm is confusing. Architects are supposed only to use mm or M, but appliance dimensions are often given in cm.

Apart from the wall cupboard soffit height you might find ideal, specific clearances are required over hobs, depending on the type. Variable soffit heights are possible, but need careful design to look good. Although I appreciate that I haven't answered your question, this may help set out the options.

Depends on the height of any tall units and the height of the wall units too 450mm is about average ...

I just wanted to share my experience because I am on a non existent budget too. I saw a picture of a bench I loved, contacted the carpenter, and he has just made me a birch ply kitchen for a total of 1600 euros, including fitting. (600 labour, 400 fitting, 600 for materials). He has kept his price low for me because he likes the project. I am guaranteed to use him now to build wardrobes, boxes, and shelving solutions as and when I have budget. Sometimes talking to individuals who work for themselves/do it on the side can result in very cost-effective solutions! I am paying 300 euros for brushed stainless steel countertops, and got a belfast sink for 100 euro including the mixer tap. Will send u a pic when it's done but my almost dream kitchen has been possible for like 2000 euros (£1800?) I wouldn't shy away from painting the units yourself as there are many tutorials online to show you how, but it is labour-intensive and eggshell paint on cabinets = drips!! You could always just get white or raw cabinets for now, and paint later when you have some cash? Make sure you use quality brushes if you go this route. Nothing more annoying than little hairs sticking in your lovely paint :-/

Hello everyone!! Wow thank you so much for your feedback and ideas, I'm bowled over by how well thought-out and detailed your responses are… all I can say is THANK YOU! It's definitely made me think of some new ideas and things to try. Now I just can't wait to move in, measure up, decorate and make it ours!! I'll try to reply to each of you here.... Bagpuss Pro - It's a good idea to rearrange integrate the fridge freezer - but I'm not sure I could live without a dishwasher!! You've made me think how maybe we can rearrange what's currently in the kitchen though. Integrating the appliances for starters will make it look and feel more streamlined. You're right, the vendors have blocked off the chimney then placed furniture in front of it - my idea would be to keep this area quite clear and maybe have the dining table there, so it's next to the kitchen for ease. We've actually only viewed the property once before placing our offer - so next time I will have a look at what the space is like and the possibility of switching the sofa / dining areas around... Minnie – I love the idea of clear acrylic chairs too! Hopefully it would make the room feel bigger as they don’t draw the eye so much. I quite like the Tobias chairs from Ikea with maybe sheepskins draped over. We would like to go for a Scandi look (boyfriend is half Danish / half Norwegian so it’s a style we both agree on!) Good idea about hanging the TV on the wall on tilt/swivel bracket, that way it could be watched from both the seating and eating areas!

Min distance between gas hob and a side wall (no wall cabinets)?

Just had a quick look on the neff website installation download and for a 700 gas hob it says a minimum of 150mm is required between the cutout and a side wall, for a 700 hob the cut out is only 560mm so the hob is wider by 70mm each side, this leaves an 80mm gap between the hob top and a wall. But as stated above, having room for pan handles and space to put a pan down is a good idea. Best to look up the installation instructions for your hob model and see what it says or have a word with a gas safe engineer as you will need one to connect the hob safely.

So... managed to find time to discuss it late last night, and we definitely like the idea of being able to make bed 3 larger. I've taken it slightly further in some ways but less in others to try and minimise the cost hopefully as bf thinks that regardless of what we do, it'll end up being prohibitively expensive to re-organise upstairs. This plan would : Keep doorways off the landing to bed 2/3 the same as they are currently (I appreciate the benefits of moving them in terms of not having it right at the top of the stairs, however there's still room for a stair gate at the top of the stairs (should we ever need one), and has never been a problem for us since we've been here regardless of who's stayed (almost 6 years). Removing your study area - we have a separate office/mancave downstairs, and I always work at the dining table even when I had an office space if doing work at home, allowing us to have a bigger family bathroom (maybe a pocket door) with hopefully room for a bath and walk in shower? (as actually the 2 bathrooms we'd be joining are quite compact!) Still quite a small landing area, which I appreciate is useful for general circulation space, but we'd be reluctant to cut into bed 3 more than we have to, and there'd be just enough room I think to have a small window which would hopefully make it feel more airy at least. FYI the pink line I've added is where we get full height ceilings back, as the front half of bed 2/3 mostly have sloped ceilings, except for where the dormers are, but they drop to about waist height at the front. The back wall of the ensuite would be the current back wall of the ensuite again to help reduce costs... Ideally I'd have preferred to creep it forward an extra 10-20cm to give that room to bed 3, however I think for such a small distance it's probably not worth having to knock down, and build another wall. What do people think? ? Obviously would still need to ask builders re cost etc and bf thinks I'm getting hopes up and it'll cost too much... (Anyone got any rough thoughts how much it might be?) but I did point out we could fit most of the bathroom stuff at a later date.

Hi Sarah,

If these wall units are going over a hob, then there are BR requirements for a minimum height dependent on whether it is gas or elec - something in the region of 700mm I recall, but the manufacturers recommendations should always be checked ... However, if it's not above a hob then this doesn't apply!
The lower the wall units the less 'useable' the counter space is - maybe try setting out the cupboards using a box or something to see how you feel with the wall cupboards at that height? Good luck with it all! K :)
