I have a huge old fireplace how to redesign it?
Comments (18)You must have a very old house to have those wonderful beams, low ceilings and short doors. MarleneM’s suggestion to install a stove is wonderful. After that, I think you need to de-clutter and bring more light into the room. Too much stuff on the mantle. Consider one or 2 large earthy pieces, consistent with the massive size of the fireplace. There seem to be too many colors: orange, pink, blue, green, and the gorgeous red and black rug. Too many pics on the walls without rhyme or reason - the colors, framing, sizes all vary - and are not in scale with the fireplace. The multiple colors, objects, and pics, and general clutter collectively clash and are discordant. Make yourself a more relaxing environment and simplify. Good luck!...See MoreOld style fireplaces

Comments (7)Hi Matthew, Do you still need some advice? The fireplace on it's own isn't bad, however, It doesn't go very well with the décor of the space. I agree with the previous comments, I would get rid of the wallpaper, either paint over it or use wallpaper again, however using light colours, such as; light grey or white. This would definitely look better as it will allow the fireplace to stand out, unlike now, it's competing with the wallpaper too much. In terms of the Fireplace, I would advice to use either stones or bricks, using neutral colours. This will look great in your space. An idea is in the photo....See MoreOld fireplace dilemma.
Comments (5)If the options are only flat wall or this then I think this is still better despite its disrepair. Personally I would plan to put in a replacement in the future when budget allows. Short term I would carefully pull out the rusted inner, clean up the arched part and paint it, clean up the surround and then accept that the fireplace is incomplete and not working but still decorative. I would then add a chimney balloon to stop drafts and dust and something decorative such as logs, candles, pine cones etc. to fill the hole....See MoreBackyard Biosphere
