Should it stay or should it go?

Mid-century home being remodeled. Can't decide weather to keep the kitchen counter/island or remove. Pro's to remove: opens up the space between kitchen and dining room, counter top is low and can put a new island/countertop to fit our needs. Con's to remove: it's part of original architecture, won't cost much to restore. What would you do?

This is a 50’s kitchen I did for a client if that helps Some things are just better ideas now than when a house was built

I would let it go. It blocks the fabulous beams from either direction and really does close down the open feel of the room.

thank you for the comment I do sometimes put the sofa on that back wall but because part of that wall juts out the sofa is offset and close to the door which looks horrible and if pulled away from wall the other door clashes on it and traffic flow is awkward so does not work and ends up back as pic. very large sofa width and deepth.

Jali is an online company that’s been going for years - they do various made to measure covers. https://www.jali.co.uk/product/radiator-covers Radiator covers aren’t always cheap (unless you find a fab carpenter as Daisy suggested) - so another option would be to replace the rads with traditional column versions - you can get some amazing ones!!

I think it's important to compare when trends begin to when there is a surpless of items to sell in showrooms. The grey trend began to end around 5 years ago (anyone who is on social media would have seen this) but the large quantitiy of grey tiles, kitchens, carpets etc etc are still sitting in warehouses today and therefore need ot be sold. Grey will never go out of fashion, but grey everything will. Ultimately, it's down to rejecting fashion. Lots of companies such as paint companies try to push their green credentials, but they then push the whole concept of 'Colour of the Year' etc and constantly talk about trends. Maria Killam on instagram and Tiktok has done some very blunt and truthful posts about trends to avoid, and how to opt for timeless interiors in order to avoid wasting money. The other side of the arguemtns is that making a house really trendy, can in some instances add a huge amount of value if you're lucky enough to sell at the right time. There's no easy answers!

Goodness I’ve gone round and round and I cannot decide where to put a wood burner. Please help! Wood stove - Osburn 950 A) Wall - Involves moving furniture to make sure there’s enough room. It’s a tad close to the dining table. We live in Texas so won’t be lit very much so might be able to just deal with it. B) Corner - I don’t love angled stoves just because I think the stone/tile underneath looks awkward. This would be a nice spot for having furniture angled towards it. I always imagined a built in cabinet here but I could have it on wall A instead. So please if you can see a better place for it or furniture configuration please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Are you remodeling, or doing a historic restoration? You need to live in your home, and fashion it so it works for you. I suggest you take lots of photos of the original features, and save them for the next owner, who may want to restore. Then, take it down.

The partitioning of space is a nice mid-century touch in your kitchen. Could you not modify the peninsula (also a mid-century element) to achieve more openness? I would remove the upper portion but leave the bottom portion and use it like a regular kitchen cabinet! It's a great place to put food or plates when eating in the dining room.

One thing that is acceptable in living in a MCM home is updating the kitchen & baths so they better fit our lives they way we live them now. Patricia Colwell has shown an excellent example of updating but still keeping the vibe of the 50's style.

Can you take doors off both sides and save for later? when you have the doors open in that photo you can get a little more open feel. I like it and think you could work around it. everyone's got an open concept now

HI -- It could and should go . Your not doing an historical restoration and it isn't very attractive and not worth saving . You have to live for today and have kitchens and bathrooms for your time . As long as the house mostly retains it's character of the time then it's fine .

Now is the time, as it will allow you to design the kitchen based on your needs and what is more aesthetically pleasing. If you change your mind down the road - which you probably will when you see your brand new kitchen and the contrast, then you have to deal with the floor. Create a space that takes advantage of its maximum usage and you can still keep a MCM look.

Our son has moved into 2 houses with this feature and those "head bumpers" are the first thing to go! It really opens up the space.
