Oak Internal Doors - Stain or Varnish?

We have had some howdens dordogne oak doors hung and are now wanting to stain/varnish them as per howdens recommendation.

Anyone have any advice on what product to use, how to apply or general tips?

Osmo raw is an oil that really brings out the grain on the doors
You can get a sample tin from osmo for a few quid to try on a piece of oak.

Hello, there are many different products to use, I like brand Ronseal quick drying Vanish.

Steps are quiet easy, sand door with medium sandpaper. In addition, if you like you can use White Spirit (make cotton cloth dump and wipe door's surface). It will remove some oils and will guarantee smooth application.

Use soft, good quality brush and apply thin layer, let it dry.

Before to apply final coat, use soft sandpaper to remove all last imperfections. Apply last coat and let it dry.

I don't know what's your door condition, may be even one coat will be enough.

I installed all oak doors, linings, architraves and skirtings in my house and they look great. As above we always use pellets to cover the screw holes running with the grain and you hardly notice them. My walls were very bad at the bottom where the skirting touched so i rebated the back of the skirtings to allow them to sit upright properly. Due to movement don't miter the internal corners. Its much better to butt and scribe them so any shrinkage doesnt open the joint as noticeably. If cost is an issue then ash is a cheaper alternative and looks very similar.

Hello. Those doors are beautiful and do not need glass that will block your view and compete for attention. My suggestion is to have clear glass. If you can find old style antiqued glass, or handmade glass that would be my vote. Otherwise just use plain glass. The key is the view through the doors (both ways). The doors will function as a frame so arrange furniture accordingly. I suggest new long curtains that hang closer to the ceiling. A beautiful neutral linen, or something that excites you. If you hang a vibrant or patterned curtain then your black sofa (is it a chair?) will not dominate the view through the doors. If you elect for a neutral curtain, then you may want to relocate the black sofa in favour of a more neutral piece. Beautiful home, what we can see of it. Good luck!

If they are Oak veneer then read the label that came attached as they tend to say not to use certain products as it can lead to delamination when it soaks in (breaks down the glue i think). I believe wax and oils are a no no. Best to check with suppliers of the doors and the product you are thinking of using. I have used osmo polyx raw without any delamination issues though, but you apply it very liberally anyway so not much product soaks into the laminate.

Green is not a colour I'd usually go to, but green grey could be ok. I'll have a look into that one too. It's quite a dark room because the long living-dining room leads into a conservatory, so the dining rooms windows are all now internal.

We decided to use Colron Oil, natural and it really has brought the doors to life.

I have only used 1 coat but think that's enough for now. It's really brought the grain out and they look superb.

Patina. It's sort of part way between a wax and a varnish. It sinks in to bring out the grain, nourishes the wood to extend its life and seals it to protect against stains. eBay or Amazon. My Dad used to use it on the table and banisters. Love the stuff.

I have the same doors - if you want them to stay light then Osmo 'raw' oil (3044) is really good. I used Osmo white tinted oil (3040) - this gives a more 'driftwood' look.

Osmo is excellent, or Sikkins. We use Osmo Teak on our handmade external doors (two coats) - feel free to follow us as we releasing product images/updates all the time (on Houzz)

I recommend the Osmo Polyx Oil Raw for internal doors. The product is natural oil based and maintains the natural colour of the timber better than other similar products. It is also food safe so can be used on preparation surfaces. Just be careful to not apply to much product at a time or you will get white lines. Less is more. 2 coats is sufficient on internal doors and joinery, 3 coats will give a slightly whitened look as the coats build.

Osmo UV Protection or Sikkens Filter 7 Plus for external timber (and maybe even internal timbers that are in direct sunlight)

Oak! How gorgeous! I wouldn't varnish/stain them at all. A natural oil or wax would be my recommendation - will bring out the grain and natural tone. Yum!

I'm looking at Howdens Dordogne unfinished oak veneer ones and for 9 doors plus hinges and basic handles, it's looking at at just uner £1500 trade price. Are they worth the extra over Wickes/B&Q equivalents which come in at £80/door?
