Handrail color?

Hi, are the handrail and stair treads painted black or are they a dark wood? I love the look but can't tell whether painted or not. Thank you!

Thank you for your question-- the handrail and the stair treads are Quartersawn Oak with a Dark Walnut Stain.

Hi both, thank you for replying. Minnie - I love that pale grey, don't suppose you know what it is?? I have some grey undercoat which is dark so I could always try that on a test patch to get an idea although I think paler would work best in this hall. It's south facing so gets sun in the morning but is fairly dark in the avo. Yes I plan on hanging some pictures to balance out the large expanse of wall up the stairs as it looks too bare now. Re the dado - I was only going to run it up the stairs really and not around the rest of the hall, although this might be a no no. It was mainly to break it up and give people something to hold/touch when walking down the stairs

Hi Jackie, Here is a closeup photo of the wall upstairs with the pictures illuminated with a spotlight in the ceiling. As our hallway is very small, it's hard to get a good zoomed out photo, but I'll put one up when I get a chance. The house is still a work in progress, but downstairs we are going to build a recess into the wall and sit an orange glass vase in it. This contrasts really well against the Railings.... Lighting wise, I assume that you have an attic above the hall. Is it boarded or do you have access to the ceiling and wiring still? If this is the case, you can get an electrician to fit spots for you after decorating is complete if you need a bit more light in there. Do you get much natural light into the hall? I can see in your photo that the front door is solid, is there a window next to it? Our front door is partially glazed and faces West. We get the evening sun through the door and it changes the Railings colour from dark grey to a much lighter Bluey green grey : ) Thanks, Peter

Thanks so much for your replies. Really helpful and definitely food for thought. Shjuly71 - I actually really like the brightness of the light grey wall photo you attached thank you! Although it's less cosy I think that would do the world of good in this house. We will have the living rooms cosy and literally only use the hallway to get between rooms and upstairs. The wooden floor is an awful red stained and full of holes where heating has been installed etc so we desperately want a carpet to stop the drafts etc. We have had new windows and front door installed just before Christmas and that has made an amazing difference in the heat levels but I really want a thick heavy door curtain too. I really feel the cold. We have a multifuel burner in the main living room and have lived with that lit since September (plus central heating on timer etc). Minnie101 - I think it would look stunning to be all white - or a softer version as suggested - although I haven't ever been 'brave' enough to try anything other than brilliant white. Maybe this could be the time? We do have a mirror which came with the house and is bleughhhh (being honest) and is currently above an old teak 1920's walnut sideboard behind the door with the glass panel in the photo. The sideboard is really dreadful but is my other half's family heirloom and has lots of their history in it so I'm stuck with it. I did suggest it would look really lovely in the cellar or garage but he isn't for taking me up on that one! We do have the upstairs bathrooms to re-do but that won't be for a couple of years as we also have a kitchen to relocate into an annexe that was added on and that's going to be a huge job. Jonathandb1972 - I really love the idea of painting the radiators the same colour as the wall and would never have thought of doing that. They stand out so much like a sore thumb but they're really needed and do a decent job of keeping some heat in the hallway. Would I just ask for a metal paint / spray in the same colour and it would match? (We are DIYers - although himself was a multi-skilled joiner in years past so have a bit of help on that front - but we will be tackling the decorating ourselves as we have a such a huge amount to do). I hadn't thought that the pine was poor quality and I quite like the stripped vestibule door and the sides but I'm not a fan of shiny varnish and orange stain. But have since looked and see that they are pretty awful. So feel less worried about painting now. I think plan might be to paint as I was first thinking - skirtings and dado in white or soft white but leave the doors, frames and architraves in wood and see if it looks just plain odd. If it does I won't worry then about painting them all. Thanks again for your input. Really really helpful.

@Goodwood Originals, You can't be outvoted on railing colours as this isn't a vote! This is advice from random strangers on the internet, and you can ignore 100% of it if you wish. You should not feel you have to use a colour you don't like. Green was a very popular colour for helping railings blend into greenery (the Bronze Green and Invisible Green are both copies of traditional colours for railings). However, your railings are more decorative than the average park railings and there's plenty of scope for deciding that they should be painted to stand out a bit rather than disappear. I think that's what I would actually do in your place - I think the modern stark white is too bright but a softer white/off white would work well with a darker green detail than they've used.Don't feel you have to aim for 'tradition' either. After all, you were thinking of painting your door stifkey blue which is a very modern colour both in terms of technology and fashion. I find colour history a fascinating subject but the vast majority of people get it 100% wrong when they imagine the colours of the past.
