Living room revamp dilemma
Comments (4)Hello dmv34e, I think the purple is good and works with the fireplace. It actually could be rather elegant with a little re-work. What could have been nice is if this feature wall was carried through to the other end of the room where the dining table is... You can then add warm colours to compliment in lighter shades of purple or even grey purples and of course stone colours.... ... Add accent cushions etc to tie in the curtains with some lighter shades here to compliment the fire surround.. The sofa is rather dominating and if you can move part of this away... If there is a chair portion that could sit where the pouffe is facing in angled, then re situate the sofa part to face the fire on the rear wall... This opens things up and more importantly the window.. Maybe hang the tv on a moveable bracket so it can angle for viewing but perhaps placed back to the wall when not in use. Thus it doesn't fight for attention when the fireplace should be the focus. If you cannot replace the sofa.. One way of lightening the dark impact here is to layer with throws.... Over the end of one arm... Something layered over the back and of course a couple of different sized cushions on one side only... Purple and stone would be my suggestion again to compliment the theme.. Some lovely flowers white and purple could be nice here... A stand for the plant... perhaps another plant... : ))...See MoreLooking to revamp lounge/living room. Dark blue and yellow/gold ideas?
Comments (5)I had colours like these in 2 of my homes for years. Blues and yellows work really well, they're beautiful and striking together, but we found that some things don't work well with them. Golds and browns work very well (gilt mirrors, leather armchairs, etc.) but -- surprisingly -- black is really out of place. I had a pair of enormous tower speakers with my sound system that could blow the windows out on half volume and were a really striking statement, but they were black and they looked weird. So I wrapped them in muslin sleeves that I was able to paint to match the walls. They were sunflower yellow for a couple of years! I stretched muslin over the removable fronts too, and spray painted them different colours. Fast forward to the future and I had to get rid of the colours to rent the house out when working overseas. And suddenly, when back to whites / magnolias / etc., the rooms looked twice the size! And they felt twice the size too! Today my company builds garden rooms, which are typically fairly small, and the use of striking colours inside really shrinks the spaces down. Most of our customers keep things fairly neutral as a result and get the striking statements from the furniture, rugs and fittings....See MoreWhat colour/style of living room furniture would suit my living room?
Comments (4)Going for a white sofa would help create a light and airy living room. The white sofa would match the airy elements you already have in the room: the light pastel wallpaper and blue chimney heart, the white skirting, the light coloured wooden flooring. The black of the fireplace hearth can be tied together with details like black legs for the white sofa, black legs (maybe hair pin legs) for a white coffee table or for a cabinet (cabinets with legs look very smart: https://www.buzzfeed.com/alisoncaporimo/legs-for-days). Black cross legged lounge chair & ottoman in a navy blue would match the navy curtains. See through furniture helps for an uncluttered feel: transparent chairs, glass table, thin furniture legs, x leg ottomans. The window coverings also have to be in light materials. Consider introducing flowy sheer fabric with or instead of the navy curtains. White or light pastel coloured area rugs in the room and avoid choosing area rugs featuring heavy and busy patterns. Braided area rugs in pastel and light colors also make a good selection. Some pictures below:...See MoreI’m not sure what floor to choose for my kitchen/living room
Comments (4)I suspect the cabinets are blue (grey is a meaningless word to desrcibe a multitude of desaturated colours, but most are actually blue/grey or blue/violet/grey or green/grey etc). I would balance the cool of the cupboards with the oak flooring (bottom image) and repeat oak items around the kitchen. 'Grey' can look sophisticated when balanced with other colours but a bit overbearing when it's overdone. A balance of 'warm' and 'cool' is always a good idea....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
