Weeding large area

Bought my house a month ago. Previous owners let the vegetable garden go once we had a signed contract. It is full of weeds now.

I want to take some time to really plan things out. I'm thinking about filling it with raised beds.

I guess my first step is to get rid of the weeds. What's the best way to do that to a 45'x40' area?

It depends on the kind of weeds. Covering it with cardboard could help.

I don't think it's that they let it go (on purpose) as much as it was that they were busy with their move. If the garden condition wasn't mentioned in the contract, we could hardly blame the previous owner for leaving a garden area unattended. Based on the pictures, it just looks like a fenced off section of grassy area, but maybe that is what you mean by letting it go.

However, regardless of the reason, for such a large space, I would make sure there aren't any pipes that can be affected, then rent a tiller and go through the area.

Either that or, using hand tools, work up small sections at a time, such as a 4x4 area. As you mentioned that you might want raised beds, you know that you don't have to till up or weed up the entire 45x40 area.

in terms of colour I'd avoid grey, green or blue so a warm neutral colour with a red or yellow undertone. A metallic paper could help to bounce the light around although will the feature walls be paint or paper? Some of the textured papers ie grasscloth, silk effect could work, as will adding mirror/s or even just a plain coloured paper?

There are a number of things to consider when talking about heating a space. Some of things are; is it single storey? are there sky lights? are there large expanses of window? Are there rooms around it? Which direction does it face? What flooring is going to be used? Solar gain? There's a host of other things to take into consideration too like what exactly will the room be used for, if it's for a living/dining/kitchen, consider if you need the sitting area to be warm enough to be comfortable to sit in for long periods, but you wouldn't need so much heating in the kitchen bit. Would underfloor heating be more practical for you, perhaps if you have young children who may play on the floor? Will you have wall space with furniture arrangement to have wall hung radiators? There are online calculators to work out your BTU requirements for a room of that size, which will give you a rough idea of how much heating you would require, but as mentioned above, there a a number of other influencing factors too.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Yes, we've looked at air source and ground source, but there are multiple complications because of our location and the fact we're retrofitting an old house. We're looking at potentially putting an MVHR system in the loft to ventilate/heat the bedrooms and bathrooms, but it's not possible to run ducting throughout the whole house, so downstairs has to be approached separately. I don't know if they let it go on purpose but they were tending to it when we saw the house. I had a garden at my previous home that I continued to tend to until the home was sold as I wanted to keep the house in the original condition. But I sometimes forget that not every seller is as diligent as I am. House was pretty well cleared out the month prior to closing when we came for inspections. We were also left with a yard infested with fleas. Just a bit disappointed at how some things were handled. But it will all work out. Will most likely do raised beds.

Covering the entire area with large black plastic sheeting typically found at big box stores, will deprive the entire area of sun, water, and air. Keep in place for as long as possible... even throughout the winter. The weeds will die back all the way to their roots. Seeds in the ground will also be distressed and will die. Then you can dig or till the area and add in compost to allow for fall or spring planting.
