Renovating Design Dilemma Kitchens

Heating large open area

Would radiators be sufficiently to heat a large open plan area (10m by 6m ish)? I'm not fussed by under floor heating but if radiators will be expensive/insufficient then would rather install the ufh before the work is completed. Thanks

I’m no expert but my 5m x 4m sitting room is heated by one large radiator and it’s boiling in here!

There are a number of things to consider when talking about heating a space. Some of things are; is it single storey? are there sky lights? are there large expanses of window? Are there rooms around it? Which direction does it face? What flooring is going to be used? Solar gain?

There's a host of other things to take into consideration too like what exactly will the room be used for, if it's for a living/dining/kitchen, consider if you need the sitting area to be warm enough to be comfortable to sit in for long periods, but you wouldn't need so much heating in the kitchen bit. Would underfloor heating be more practical for you, perhaps if you have young children who may play on the floor? Will you have wall space with furniture arrangement to have wall hung radiators?

There are online calculators to work out your BTU requirements for a room of that size, which will give you a rough idea of how much heating you would require, but as mentioned above, there a a number of other influencing factors too.

Wooden floors would look great - if the rooms are long and narrow lay the planks horizontally as this will make the rooms appear wider - if they are short and wide lay them vertically to make them appear longer - you could compromiise by laying wood look tiles in the kitchen but wood throughout will look more streamlined - we have wood on our open plan Floors and a massive rug in the living room - easy to change a rug as you change colour schemes - not so with fitted carpets! A log burner is considerably cheaper, cleaner & more efficient than an open fire. I hear what you’re saying Sonia. But if installed correctly with the correct flue & one has access to dry wood then they really are more efficient than a gas or electric fire. John - most log burners are the same & quite simple. What you need to calculate is which size kw to get. If it’s too big the room will be scorching, if too small won’t be enough heat. Make sure you get your chimney lined with a proper glue. That’s about it. You can pick up log burners for a few hundred quid, ours is a cast iron second hand but it’s fine - all you do is Chuck the wood in, light & that’s it! Is does seem that the lesser known brands of LVT are the same thickness and same warranty as the major brands- the difference seems to be the colour choice and size of marketing budget. So as long as you like the colour choice with another brand then I think the cost saving is worth having. Separately the issue with herringbone over an expansive area is making the pattern meet up- generally a competent fitter will have no problems- I wonder if the issue is that you aren’t actually looking at LVT but instead floating floors (click together floors as opposed to stick down to the screed). Floating floors need to expand and over a large sized area can need an expansion strip adding which looks fine if you can add it to a doorway but looks odd in the middle of a large room.

We're approx 9 x 6 and have a glass roof on part of it, we have two radiators and it's really warm in here. Just pick the right rads with a good BTU.

If you choose UFH this frees up walls which is important if you are taking down walls to create an open concept. But there is a cost implication and there are probably radiators in place already.
