Please tell me what would be best, tiles or normal wall paint to improve the front elevation of my house.

The front of a house should be crisp and clean and elegant. That all important kerb appeal is created by simple lines and geometry. Give the hedge a radical trim, or even better take it out and put in something more structured like Hornbeam or Box that you can keep in shape. Introduce a tiled threshold that marks the entrance to the property. Have some wall washers either side of the entrance so that it's warm and inviting by night. Use some simple planters with clipped topiary to create a chic frame to the entrance. If you've got sufficient budget re-lay the pathway with a natural stone, or tile and give it a generous width of at least 1.2m to allow for planting to grow over. Create some simple planted borders along the pathway, again to mark the entrance to the house and introduce some softness. If you're looking for low maintenance remove the lawn and introduce more paving and some simple planting. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but planting takes much less time to maintain than a lawn. If a lawn is not mown regularly it will quickly become overgrown and scruffy. A lawn needs weeding and feeding, scarifying and aerating regularly to keep it looking good. Hiding the bins is also a good idea. If you can't keep them round the back then put in a wooden bin store, or hide them with some hedging. Rockpanel Cladding on Front Elevation - advice please

We are about to embark upon a house re-design - existing and proposed plans attached. I am keen to use a Rockpanel Chameleon Cladding on the front of the house (which is on the beach) - this material changes colour depending on the effect of the light and the angle from which it is viewed (in this case blue to green to purple). Originally we thought to put the material in the middle of the house, however, this doesn't look right - so not sure. We will probably increase the 3 window/door panels on the left to four - all ideas gratefully received.

Hi, were currently in the process of choosing the type of front elevation style we should go with? Our preference is thin black slate lower and the use of some wood cladding with render above? The house will be glass linked to a redeveloped barn. Any advice would be much appreciated

Hi Ispendl, Sorry took a bit longer than I thought it would. Thanks for the extra pictures. Your house is detached which is great news! Btw you are not limited by the 60's or the brick colour! And I'm glad you like contemporary. What I'm going to propose might seem a bit radical, but the changes are actually quite easy to do and not that expensive if you are thinking of changing out all the windows anyway. The large bedroom window should have above it a lintel that holds up the roof, and if the ground floor ceiling joist run parallel to the windows, everything below the lintel is removable (obviously you would make sure via a structural engineer.) So.... I would remove both windows and the walls below each one and replace with one large glazed wall, and replace remaining windows with single openings. I would also replace the sloped porch roof with a flat one. Finally I would render the whole front to get rid of the tired yellow brick colour (you could, if budget allows, add external insulation before you render) and add wood cladding to the new area created by removing the sloped roof, a nice solid wood door and a glazed garage door.
