Wall colour for smallish dark living room

I'm struggling to choose a wall colour for this room so would welcome any suggestions (and any ideas for decor generally!). It is a small, fairly dark, living room. The sofa is staying but the TV and curtains aren't. I also have a chaise which is currently in a dark dusky pink velour but could be reupholstered. I'm considering changing the carpet but would prefer a paint colour that complemented it in case I don't. Any ideas?

Comments (8)Hi Sian! I would not recommend painting the wall red or green as per se. If you have a small room and furniture is red/green you need to be careful with wall colour, I suggest keeping it as neutral as possible. Soft/dark grey is a safe choice and looks good in contrast to red. It would be good to see the rest of the furniture for a better perspective, perhaps you can take photos with your phone? Check out the option below for colours. Considering your description of the room, I would think about Fashionable grey or Moroccan brown (disregard the blue and brick colours) ? Comments (6)Hi there I think the green on that one wall looks very cosy and certainly works well. I would advise you to pair lighter coloured furniture against the green otherwise it could look too heavy. I think the same green across the other walls could work well, as long as you add contrasting colours such as white and also add warmth with gold and brass. Looking at your grey sofa's as you've not mentioned that you are replacing them I will assume they are staying and in which case you might want to go for a slightly lighter coloured green on those walls such as Teresa's Green from Farrow and Ball. As a side note I also recommend changing the colour of the door either the same colour as the dark green on a complimentary colour safest option being white! Hope that helps! Comments (4)It depends on what else you have in the room, the sofa colours etc. It looks to be a really nice room with some lovely features. Personally, I wouldn't paint it all a blue or a dark colour as East facing rooms can be gloomy on an afternoon. Have a look on instagram, there is a total shift away from dark interiors towards more neutral warmer ones. 7 years agoHere's what I was thinking: a light, graphic pattern for the curtains and a funky mix of pillows with pink and orange colours. The sofa is posing as yours :-)

7 years agoWow, thank you both for responding and giving such great suggestions. I really like the ideas of switching the room around (though that would mean moving the TV socket), and putting a mirror above the sofa. Re room colour, a light blue would really work so that's a good suggestion. I'm not generally a fan of pastel colours, hence why I'm finding the dusky pink tricky to work with, but if I could find a nice shade of blue that I like, that could be good. A warm white would definitely also light up the room.
One option I did consider was having a feature wall, potentially a dark grey, with the other three quite light, but I don't know if that would make the room too dark or seem smaller. I'd appreciate your thoughts. I'll try to attach a picture, though it is shown in a much bigger, lighter room. Thanks

7 years agoKeep the Sofa and the curtains, it's the blinds that are sucking the light out, change them for white. Paint the walls in a very pale grey to tie in with the sofa and footstool, and have the chaise re-covered in something bright and funky, patchwork is great.
Add a contrasting rug, and, paint the wooden chest in an accent colour to co-ordinate with something on the chaise, add matching cushions and a rug in the same accent colour to liven up the neutral grey.
Job done.

7 years agoHi. Maybe have a look at peignoir by farrow and ball (wall colour in the pic).
If you kept the chaise on that wall but with the plant in the corner behind it, you could try worsted on that wall with a really large floor standing mirror behind the chaise to bring in light and and make the room feel bigger. A pale green would work as an accent colour, perhaps a throw for the chaise and then some cushions for the sofa

does the sofa fit under the windows but pulled away a little with the chest in front and TV on the wall opposite to the one it's on now? I'd go for Roman blinds for the windows hung outside of the recess, layered with voile blinds if needed for privacy

So I'm kind of stuck with the chaise as it is but could move it to another room (at the cost of moving the problem elsewhere). It's not actually mine so I don't really want to go to the expense of reupholstering it. The chest also isn't mine, but I'll have them both for a few years yet. If I move the chaise I'd probably have to swap it for a deep red rocking chair I have in another room (see pic), which would again influence the colour scheme. The sofa would fit under the window but there's a radiator there so it's not really ideal. I'll look into moving the TV point though as that would allow me to have chaise / rocking chair and sofa on two walls together.
I agree that the blinds are an issue so I think I'll try to get either a glass covering instead, or some white blinds. I may even paint the windows white too if I'm brave enough.
For the walls, I liked your mock up Carolins and the suggestions to use a light grey. That's what I was already considering. Still can't decide whether to have a dark grey feature wall, but it's tempting. I agree with the accent colour suggestions - I really like pink or yellow with grey. Carolins - where are those yellow toned cushions from? Definitely a big mirror too.
