Exterior Colours

We have a 1920s house with a modern timber clad extension, we recently got the old house cleaned to remove growth and it has come up lovely, but there are inconsistencies in texture. We want to paint it and also repaint the front door and Windows (restored sash). The new Windows are dark grey as are the downpipes etc. We have a f&b French grey (very green)kitchen and you can see this from the front so that's our colour scheme. I would love to introduce blue for the front door, any suggestions??

I really think you should consider timber. All WWA members have their windows tested against air and water leakage, so there won't be any problems there. They come factory-finished in any RAL colour and can be repainted (outside or inside) whenever you want. And the frames will last twice as long as plastic. I would replicate its original windows, which are beautiful. It's a handsome house - keep its value by keeping its authentic character.

I think a new front door is in order. I don't think it has to be completely faithfully to the original but perhaps something with a long central window (or a three windows) will be the right feel for the house. As far as the roof pitch I don't mind it on the side extension but I feel the porch should have a flat roof. Look at the neighbours for inspiration- it might have had a semicircular flat roof to compliment the bay or there might have been a wider porch that was a continuation of the lintel over the bay window.

I’d certainly paint both lower & higher wall as one colour. Trim in the alternate colour. But I’d have a wander along the road, to see how people deal differently with both the tiled section + stucco section above and below the 1st floor windows. Maybe worth capturing photos of the different treatments of it, irrespective of colour? From that you can decide which approach you prefer. See if what appeals most, is where the facade is least broken up by different planes of colour or do you prefer those houses where a variety of different tones or distinctly different colours are used? I imagine the tiled section, might originally have matched the roof tile?

Thanks so much for replying and for adding the pic. The current exterior is not painted, so it's just concrete render in brick shapes ifkwim. I would be on for painting the exterior, and also changing the sash window colours and of course the front door. Thanks

Hi @seoulone,

No problem at all! The building at the back (I'm guessing that's yours) looks pretty modern. You could definitely go with a more modern look for the front building too... possibly black or very dark grey (similar to the first image below)?

This could help to tie both buildings together more? If you did want to keep the grey though, I'm sure some white window frames (below) and a brightly coloured door would also do the trick and help to brighten everything up a bit! It's a lovely space to work with you you've got lots of options.
