Removal of Japanese knotweed from garden - any advice

A survey of my Mum's garden has revealed the presence of Japanese knotweed. This has meant her house sale has fallen through, as the morgage provider wouldn't grant a morgage. It appears to be present in several adjoining gardens too. Anyone have any advice on its removal and how to proceed as quickly as possible?

If you do an online search, you'll find good advice. The main point is that it/s best to use weedkiller on it rather than cut it down, since the roots need to be killed entirely.. Fortunately for your mother and her neighbours, the end of the summer is the best time to treat it. It may need more than one treatment.

If you don't want to do it yourself there are a few people out there who specialize in knotweed (and other invasive species) removal, some will offer a programme of treatment and a guarantee. It will likely need several treatments before it is eradicated and if it's still adjacent could come back.

An idea is for fake grass which my parents suggested and I don't mind - but my husband hates. Would you use this on the whole area or leave a border of stones around it instead? Was going to get some purple slate perhaps or white stones to cover the ugly ones and give it some lift.

Hi Rachel, Sorry for the late reply again, full day in the garden..🤷‍♂️ gotta make the most of the weather! Thank you for this design, I really like your presentation and it does encourage me to ‘have a go’ with the art work, although I don’t think I’ll be posting any of my efforts on here! I wish I also shared your enthusiasm about growing green fingers, but I will try and I’m quite determine to give it a go. Thank you so much for all your ideas and designs over the last few days.. it is really quite humbling the help and enthusiasm from all on here, especially in these days of unprecedented and bizarre circumstances. It has also given me a boost and of course something to focus on whilst on lockdown (I’d never would have had the time/or the weather to have launched myself into this in normal times!) Hopefully I’ll be able to come back to you with some early stage pics of the garden and some design ideas that we’ve taken up. Help -Need advice on garden design which includes rear garage removal

I’m in a semi detached but might as well be classed as a terraced as there’s no direct access straight through to the garden. The access is difficult as everything would need to taken down a very narrow path (access for small cars to be parked in rear garages) I’ve been told there‘s a lot of manual work which is why the cost altogether is quite high. I’ve been quoted £300 per day for labour and it will take 7days for everything to be taken out completely from the garden. On top of this a minimum of 3 skips costing around £700. The garage is also quite high up and I would need a retaining wall once taken out and landscaping starts. Our budget was around £7k for completing everything but we getting quotes around £9500. 😩

Hi Suzy, It is a very good idea to have a final plan for the garden and do it bit by bit as budget allows. Sometimes people try to do it all at once and it can lead to compromises in the quality of materials to make the budget go further. I think that raised beds will be a very good addition to your garden. I always say that amending a heavy clay soil should be the last option as it is time and money consuming and you need to repeat the procedure overtime. I think that either putting the planting in raised beds (which, if well thought of can be great additions to the garden, creating vertical interest, maybe acting as sections division and seating) or selecting the planting so that only plants that can tolerate this condition (roses are a good example) are used are much better options. Trellises in your case could not only work as sections divisions, but could also screen out the two sheds that you wish to have in your final garden, so probably a good idea. Layout-wise, in my opinion your curved borders do give your garden a nice shape, and creating paths that follow it somewhat would be a good idea.
