Kitchen flooring

I have finally chosen a matt off white (bone) shaker style kitchen with beech wood worktops. Now I am stuck with what flooring to go for. Do I go with a matching colour wood flooring or tiles. I think i wood prefer tiles but do I get matt or polished and what colour would compliment?

Hi Vicki, we could help with a wood floor option? If sealed correctly these work well in a kitchen environment and would compliment the shaker style, espeically if you considered a reclaimed oak floor. Please see our website www.britishwoodflooring.co.uk for more ideas. Many thanks David

I've attached a couple of images from our customers who have had off white (linen) coloured Shaker kitchens alongside our tiles. The Premium Classic Travertine are the warmer, more modern looking tiles and the image with the blue cooker has our Umbrian Limestone on the floor.

It depends on your style and how busy your household is as to the best finish. Generally customers prefer a matt finish in the kitchen, to minimise the risk of slipping. Polished tiles tend to be a lot more slippy, which isn't great if you have little ones running around!

There are many designs similar on ebay if you type Victorian floor tiles, a vast array of patterns and styles will come up with some more ostentatious than others. Hope this helps.

Hi Sarah, Huge rug under dining table - big yes! As I mentioned before, just make sure it it doesn't have a deep pile and is fairly easy to clean / hoover. This will break up the black considerably! The rug size needs to be big enough to pull all your chairs out and they still sit on the rug - that's the minimum right size. Just a thought about finding the right paint colour for your walls and cabinets to brighten everything up. When my family took a trip down to cornwall, we stayed in this lovely cottage in the country-side. The cottage had small little deep windows, so didn't get much light in. However the cottage was so bright, warm & crisp. It had been painted a white that really really worked - white can be tricky to get right. So I called the owners of the cottage to see if they had a paint can laying around so I could find out the exact colour. It was straight Brilliant White - standard paint you can get for kitchens, walls, ceilings, masonry, etc in whatever finish you need (matt, sheen, semi-gloss or gloss). I've used it a couple of times sinse to freshen up or update an area, to make small spaces pop, or just to bring a whole space that crisp - perfect white look to show off art and objects (it is one of the few whites that can do so well as art and objects usually look dull or get lost with a plain white background). This might help with your project as it is the best paint for reflecting light and brightening your areas - but it is bright - so you will have to do a test area to see if it is too bright for you, in which case go with a white toned down from that. Think the rug(s) & the paint colour change of walls & cabinets will work the best for you since you've spent a lot on your interior already and your husband likes it as is - it is hard to justify large costs when your partner thinks it is great and you've already spent a lot.. Its the classic question we get all of the time at Rock and Wood. I would be considering something thats not polished, i agree with Sophie at Floors Of Stone, Polished in the kitchen is very slippery!

Natural Stone, Oak or oak effect porcelain are your choices.

Natural Stone - Each piece is totally unique and will look fantastic for many years to come providing you choose the right stone for your house hold (agree with Sophie again), we would ask 'what is your brief?' do you have messy children and a or a dog? we have hard wearing, put it down and forget about it stones just for that brief. or are you a 'take off your shoes and put slippers on' kind of person, who would like a stunning creamy fossil limestone?

Oak - I agree with David, thats if the oak is treated well then its a great option. We have some great new Loft oak boards

Oak tiles - These are great but watch out for the cheap versions! they look plastic... we have a new range from Italy that i would be happy to discuss with you.
