Lights in living room

we have a character house in Queensland. Our living room has a fan that is off centre and we would really like to put a new fan centrally in the room. However we don't want to have a light on the fan. Any suggestions for lighting ie position of lights that would work? The room is about 6 x 4 m. And has tv down one end. we were thinking putting 2 lights eg pendant style either side of the fan (along the 6 m length) but this would put a light in front of the TV. Would just having one light at the rear of the room work (above lounge) would that look umbalanced? We were looking at lights like this:

Hi koula_c, I recommend that you centralise the fan as it will be important for cooling for the summer months in Queensland. Check out Big Ass Fans for contemporary options. This could be an good option:

Given you have one significant piece in the ceiling you might consider recessed LED lighting in a warm white for light. I would switch them separately and dim them to facilitate mood lighting. This could be complimented by table lamps in the room. Here are a few examples:

Try an led downlights or ceiling light either side of fan dont need pendants near fan

Hi Takawira, I have recently added a Sotto Luce 3-arm suspension pendant for around £80 from madeindesign.com in a room. It was meant for a small-ish (3mx3m) home office with a good source of natural light (South facing window). I used vintage Edison LED bulbs from here: http://www.cultfurniture.com/lighting-c11/edison-st64-t9-vintage-ferrowatt-e27-led-light-bulb-p1879 They have an equivalent of 40W. The overall effect is beautiful but the light is not strong enough. It just feels very 'dimmed'. On that basis I would not add to a living room as a main light source. But it would look indeed very cool as a secondary light source. It may well be the reason they have these over dining tables!

Maybe something like the below - there's a few different ideas depending on the style of the room. You should probably decide whether you want to draw attention to the light, or whether it should just blend in and sit nicely with the rest of the room? Hope this helps! How about a giant recycled glass vase or bottle filled with fairy lights or better still a group of three. Since recycled glass is imperfect it will reflect the lights beautifully. You can also add other things in with the lights as well for a more subtle feel. Some artificial silk petals would look lovely. Also have a look on eBay or Etsy for vintage finds. I agree with the fairy light trees, I think they look a bit plasticky. Hope you find something lovely, plus the cat looks very comfy there:)

Hi all. Thanks for the suggestions. I am wary that down lights are too modern but I can see there are some more stylish options. Also good point re pendants and ceiling fans. We have lots of work to go so hopefully the room will be much improved soon.
