Help needed please for living room makeover
We've recently moved into a new house and are looking for some advice and inspiration from fellow Houzzers before embarking on our living room makeover. the room measures approximately 3.9m x 5.3m and so far we have replaced the old sliding door to the garden with a bifold. Our plan is to refurb completely including renewing the fireplace, new sofas and fitting wall lights and downlights. The bifolds face to the east and generally it's a nice light room.
Really we're after people's thoughts on two fronts but would welcome any advice in general:
1. We're leaning towards painting the walls in a dark colour but are not 100% certain if this is the right way to go? We'd like to create a bit of impact and make the room feel a bit cosier.
2. Layout - currently it's ok but is there a better option ? We had thought of moving the tv to the other side of the fireplace to get away from the light coming in through the bifold but this then has a knock on effect with seating.

Comments (10)HI -- I like the red wall but I think the whole room in that would be too much. So right now you need to cut down the contrast of the red wall . Paint a light cream tan on the other walls and also on the ceiling but leave the crown the same color. This will tone down the red and accent the crown molding. You could also use a blueish grey in the same way. Or you could also use a grey with a hint of lavender . Get some color sample cards or pots (benjamin moore paints). Comments (5)I'm looking for a clean modern living room. It does need light to brighten it up. The only source of natural light is from the patio windows. So I'm looking for light colours, I have thought of maybe ivory colour for the walls. I will be keeping the leather three piece suite which is new. Also Dark brown. The room is approximately 21' x 11'. There is an old fireplace situated in one half of the room. This has a gas-fire in the hearth. I'd like to see this replaced with a flat gas fire on the wall,raised, it would mean taking out the tiled fire surround. I'm not sure what sort of feature I would have the chimney breast but it would have to break up the rest of the room. I'm not sure whether to paint or wallpaper but would like a warm effect even though light and clean looking. I like carpet but I'm not sure what to put on the floor at the moment At the moment it is full of all furniture which I will have to dispose of maybe through antique dealers etc etc. Overall I would like it to be a "wow" feature when walking in. Comments (3)I tried to place furniture in your room, but do not know where is window or not. So I got what I got. I am sure the round dining table will be better. I just did not have it in my software. Try to move two sofas on different direction. may be both on the corner would be better. Round table is on other corner....See More

I agree and don't think the current layout works.
Reading Craig's comment, we seem to be thinking along the same lines. I was thinking something like this layout (click on pic to enlarge), but it does mean that you'd need to cover up the fireplace. I've placed a wood burner in the corner and am thinking that a different, vertical radiator would free up valuable wall space.
Let me see if I can come up with a good furniture layout option, keeping the fireplace where it is.

I see some great ideas on layout. Very helpful. You need to move things around to get a feel for what you want?
Going back to decor Please consider us. A shaker style paneling 3/4 high would look fantastic. It will give some real depth and luxury to the living room. See attachments

What about to change the perspective a bit. put the TV on the back wall into a full wall bookshelf. you even can squeeze a small laptop desk space if needed. that way you will have a more interesting social space. you will have a window view, a fireplace mantle view and the TV view. the room becomes multifunctional. Don't be afraid of dark colour scheme. you are right it makes room cosier. how about Farrow and Ball Stiffkey Blue with some Cornforth White and Purbeck Stone. mix with copper accent and geometric wallpaper.
PRO7 years agoThe current radiator position looks to be ensuring a very warm sofa, but won't be helping heat the rest of the space. So I would look to move the radiator from what would sensibly be a sofa or TV wall. What about having 2 vertical radiators either side of the bifolds? These would look great as well as putting some heat into what I would expect to be the coldest part of the room (near lots of glass!). Below are some ideas:
