White woodwork internally

Hi please advise what white paint I should use for woodwork on stairs, panelling, skirting, architraves and doors. I want the white to really stand out. I have pics of what I like below on white woodwork. Do I choose white gloss or sheen or mat to get these looks? Thanks in advance.

You could get specialist paint from Farrow and Ball or another premium shop. They'll do appropriate undecoats as well. I think gloss is very out of favour these days - perhaps go for eggshell.

I don't think you can beat pure brilliant white if that's the look you want. Definitely a Matt finish though, not gloss! If you want a different shade of white then you can get farrow and ball colour mixed in a good paint store. Hope that helps.

Hi OnePlan, thanks for the reply. Good idea to check if anyone is planning a change of colour. I like your idea of inverting the other colours but as you can see there isn't really any colour going on anywhere. Except for the one mint house (just to the left of the frame of this photo) all the others are white w white trim. I really don't want to do anything bright white if for no other reason than the render just gets too dingy (the little lumps and bumps collect such a lot of dust and soot as well as the gull issue). F&B haven't been much help which surprised me as I see so many houses in the country that use these dull dun/greys on woodwork, I'd assumed they'd have some ideas for walls.

It is the devils own job! You heed to sugarsoap everything down first to clean it. Sand it well and then apply a bumber of coats of a good solvent based white undercoat ( water based undercoats wont hack it). You need to apply as many as necessary until no more dark wood shows through. Then finish with a coat of a good quality finishing coat (satinwood, egg shell etc). It will take you forever! Good luck!

First rule - don't be rushed in choosing a colour. If undecided, then go for a flat white throughout - THEN get a feel for the accessory top notes in each room. I recommend you go for an off white by Little Greene, Shirting 129 is perfect. Then choose your finished colours when you have settled in to the room, with furniture, favourite pieces and ...check the lighting in each room at various times of the day. Get a sample pot of tempting colours , paint onto a4 piece of card or paper, position on various walls in the rooms. Different light, different time of the day will all affect the colour you see. I personally love Grey shades on walls at the moment, they work brilliantly with amber glass wear, pewter or natural wood or stones in a bowl, with white crockery, and the pops of spring green plants in a kitchen.

Take a look at J B Kind and LPD Doors websites. They’re a couple of the UKs main importers and distributors. You won’t be able to buy direct from them but you can always ring and find a supplier in your area. They have thousands of choice included and white too

I did this recently and we were advised to go for a matt finish and I am really pleased with the results. We did a few coats of Ronseal wood primer first (£28 a tin) then followed it with brilliant white matt emulsion. It looked really nice when finished!
