You can just paint a wall in chalkboard paint - available from most DIY/ hardware shops.

If you're unsure about doing anything drastic you could try getting some wall stickers. They are easy to remove and you can get them tailored to whatever your kid / kids are into and then you could perhaps use the colours on the sticker to give that small area more of play identity. I like the idea of having a seat there so adults can sit and play / read with the kids. I like the ideas for chalkboard and magnetic paint but I've used magnetic chalkboard paint before and I would warn you that chalk is dusty, so if keeping this area clean is going to be an issue then think carefully about it. Also magnetic paint needs SO many coats before magnets can really stick to it, so you'd need to factor in much more paint than you think you need and a lot of time to do coat, after coat, after coat.

If you're feeling brave you could have a really simple update with a chalkboard wall. Looks like you have kids. Some pics below for inspiration. Doesn't have to be all about black, you can add pops of colour too and then continue those into table mats, accessories etc. You could do a half wall and leave radiator below white (perhaps with slimline shelf above radiator running while length to the partition wall to delineate) or go whole hog and paint radiator black too. Its a lovely space. Good luck !

ok... "I wet the roller before i start and pat with a paper towel to remove excess water.".... I take mine outside and give them several hard stabs/shakes until absolutely not a flicker of a drop comes out then rub it with a tea towel to fluffy dry. Paper towels do nothing in my opinion. If youre using a wet roller (and water hides in them well) then youre going to get a bit of a messy wet edge when applying
