A simple question - which would you choose and why?

We looked and couldn't find much about it and which would be the right decision for us. We wanted one that was waterproof but not slippy and still stylish. We found this article on bathroom flooring really helpful.

Do you have UFH? If yes I'd choose non slip porcelain but if not it would be vinyl.

I would only go for porcelain if you have underfloor heating. Too cold in the winter otherwise. Lots of good luxury vinyl tiles around though - plus these are easier to lay.

Hi Dundrum, sorry I don’t think grey would go at all, It was more to show you the variety of styles in vinyl rather than the colour. Here’s some more appropriate, warm shades, creams and beiges as well as wood effect. If you have time, visit a flooring shop and you will see 100s of examples, that’s what I did. I did also choose a Moroccan patterned vinyl below, but I’m not sure the shade is quite right? I really like the first dark wood effect one.

I wonder whether a darker wood effect tile would work on the floor? Darker wood seems to create a more classy feel whereas the pale wood tiles (which are nice) seem more beachy.

I do not have underfloor heating and was not thinking of installing it. I like the effect of porcelain tiles.

Porcelain tiles are great as they can mimic the beauty of natural stone - pair with UFH and it will be lovely all year round.

Luxury vinyl tiles are great and have a warmer touch than porcelain, they come in a range of designs and depending on how far your budget stretches investing in the good quality stuff from brands such as amtico and karndean, it'll be sure to last you a long time.

LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) are the way forward. You get warmth on your feet without the need of underfloor heating, easy to keep clean, they come in various colors, sizes and patterns. There also so realistic and the prices vary depending on what you want and the quality, so there is always something that is in your budget.

Hi Fran, vinyl is really popular for bathrooms as it's water resistant, comfortable and unlike porcelain tiles, warm underfoot. With vinyl, you also have the choice of going for a wood or stone effect.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I have decided on the best vinyl tiles I can afford. In the end it was the warmth underfoot that decided me.

I would personally go for vinyl tiles, as it is water resistant and comfortable, also i have it in my bathroom. It's very good at retaining heat, so the vinyl tile stays nice and warm for a lot longer than porcelain tiles. Also it is soft and comfortable to walk on. Have a look at this link, they have some beautiful flooring!

Porcelain is always a great choice for bathrooms as it is generally quite low maintenance. There are a range of different styles and finishes to choose from, such as concrete effects or natural stone imitations, meaning you can tailor the look to your preference. We'd recommend a fully vitrified porcelain to ensure it is non permeable to water and something with a bit of texture is always good in wet areas!

Always porcelain. I've got both. Vinyl is cheapy and awful and cannot wait to take it up and replace. Tiles just never go wrong and i dont have underfloor heating.

We laid porcelain tiles in our main bathroom 10 years ago, it's 12 ft square, with a high ceiling, and so we put in a pair of large chrome radiators with a slightly higher BTU rating than the room needed. It's lovely and warm in the winter, and the tiles have never felt cold. Expensive, but they still look as good as they did at the start. I doubt that any kind of vinyl could last that long.

Porcelain is a tough tile which will not crack or break easily. they are very long lasting. vinyl is out dated and just doesn't look good. Your other option should be ceramic tiles. So it should be between ceramic and porcelain. I'd still recommend porcelain but ceramic is cheaper, that's the biggest advantage of ceramic. I bought these porcelain tiles two weeks ago, they look lovely.
