Carpeting a house

Hi,

I live in a 1930s mid terrace with three bedrooms. We want to recarpet the hallway (inc stairs) and bedrooms. I like the idea of having the same carpet running through the whole area to give a sense of space, but is this really necessary? Should I have one lot of carpet for the bedroom and another for the hall? Flooring doesn't excite me, so whatever we choose, it will be neural. I do like he fashionable striped carpet but things like that date so quickly!

Either goes.

I have hall, stairs and landing in one colour and then each bedroom in a different colour. I've decorated them at different times so the flooring has been done at different times too.

Hi Charlotte,

It is tricky when a large area and a big expense.

Your floor covering obviously needs to be fit for purpose so the rooms you've mentioned have differing requirements. Anything on the stairs needs to be hard wearing therefore carpets are usually a little more robust than whats needed for a bedroom. Of course you can still have one size fits all but it opens more options to you. As many 1930's have central hallways, transitions to the rooms are usually visible therefore you could choose similar tones or have bedroom carpets with a deeper pile to give a more luxe feel if you don't want too feel the space is too chopped up.

Many striped carpets have good longevity if more muted so you could use a runner up the stairs and select one of the colours from the runner to do plain upstairs adding some interest to your hallway.

As you mention you like neutral I don't feel you can got too wrong with what you chose. Just loan out some larger samples from you carpet shop lay them next to each other and see what feels good to you.

For carpet lovers, sometimes it is hard to resist the temptation of buying a carpet even if it requires significant improvements to re capture its original look. Basically, by observing and contemplating, in split seconds you commit yourself to a massive challenge ahead. This extremely rare antique handmade silk and wool Persian carpet belonging to the first part of the 20th century was one of those challenges. Made in the city of Qum and measuring 300 x210cm (10’x6’7”), it seemed that it had lost its charm and splendid look due to years of negligence. That is why, restoring rare carpets becomes ever so exciting and if repaired well very much rewarding. The project of restoring this extraordinary rug back to its original state, took almost two years, as part of the challenge was to find various professionals to accept this work. However, I am delighted to announce that the project was finally completed and surplus my expectations. For those who are interested to know, the restorations were as follow: 1-Both ends re-done and secure 2-Salvages re-woven and look original 3- It was professionally stretched to become straight and flat 4-Some repiling on both silk and wool areas at the centre. 5- There was no re- colouring as I am fully against this on any carpet in particular antique ones. 6-Reducing the tension due to scratching Apart from a few localised areas of wear, commiserated with age, the rug has now regained its original look and for sure can bring elegance to those who appreciate exquisite antique carpets around their homes for many years to come. HI Louise, Not knowing your preference and the room orientation I will tell you what I would. Personally I would paint the walls grey then I would you the colors (blue; white and pink) of "flowers" on the carpet as palette for the furniture and accessories of the house; for instance dark blue for a wardrobe and bedside table, pink for the frame of pictures. To use the same colors of the carpet for everything will help to blend the carpet in. I hope it is of help Silvia

Could you not go for even a laminate over some of the floors that need insulating rather than leaving them just floorboards? Also you can get finished panels which sit over the stair treads to give a new tread in a soolid wood - think of them like veneers for teeth! Especially useful if your stairs are all rickety like ours were. If you are going to try and sand them all down then it’s worth just staining rather than painting them from experience. Sanding is something we attempted twice and it’s such hard work, difficult to end up with smooth floors and not gouging out bits and is also expensive to do. Get a pro in to do it properly if your floors are good quality. We had just pine in our old Victorian house and they are to soft and marked v easily so looked a mess quickly Our master bedroom here is floorboards and I’m literally going to manually sand them lightly - removing any bumps then use a floor paint with a light coat of clear varnish on top. Will be much cheaper and save us the cost of installing carpet as well (having no budget of course, ha ha)

Hello Charlotte, I advise having one carpet colour throughout as it is so much easier on the eye. You want the colour schemes to flow throughout the house and keeping the carpet plain and neutral helps with this. If you want variety throw some rugs down later. Good luck.

I've made a decision - we've gone for stripe in on the stairs and upstairs landing (the downstairs hall is wood) and we've gone for a neutral that match the neutral in the strip in the bedrooms (beige). THanks for your help! We got the stripe carpet on the end of the roll so it's costing us the same as a decent rug :-)
