For carpet lovers, sometimes it is hard to resist the temptation of buying a carpet even if it requires significant improvements to re capture its original look. Basically, by observing and contemplating, in split seconds you commit yourself to a massive challenge ahead. This extremely rare antique handmade silk and wool Persian carpet belonging to the first part of the 20th century was one of those challenges. Made in the city of Qum and measuring 300 x210cm (10’x6’7”), it seemed that it had lost its charm and splendid look due to years of negligence. That is why, restoring rare carpets becomes ever so exciting and if repaired well very much rewarding. The project of restoring this extraordinary rug back to its original state, took almost two years, as part of the challenge was to find various professionals to accept this work. However, I am delighted to announce that the project was finally completed and surplus my expectations. For those who are interested to know, the restorations were as follow: 1-Both ends re-done and secure 2-Salvages re-woven and look original 3- It was professionally stretched to become straight and flat 4-Some repiling on both silk and wool areas at the centre. 5- There was no re- colouring as I am fully against this on any carpet in particular antique ones. 6-Reducing the tension due to scratching Apart from a few localised areas of wear, commiserated with age, the rug has now regained its original look and for sure can bring elegance to those who appreciate exquisite antique carpets around their homes for many years to come. I have always been attracted to the Carmel-by-the-Sea houses designed by Comstock...the interiors are often decorated casually, with comfy sofas, chairs, maple & cherry furniture and nature-inspired art and accessories. Big fantasy. In real life, we are retired on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and live in a 1200 sq.ft. condo one block off a large town's Main St. and two miles from any beach. Except for the building and location, we have the rest...not sure if our decor is English casual, English coastal or ???, but I wouldn't change it, except to buy better quality sofa and chairs.

What a beautiful and perfect table you found! Hubba hubba - those legs are just gorgeous. Well done and thanks for calling out to me. As for the chair mix, I think four beige and two merlot would be lovely. I think you like a traditional look, so I'm a bit worried that you won't be happy with it. If the table will normally be smaller with four beige chairs around it and maybe put the two merlot ones on either side of the radiator cover/"console", then definitely do the mix. Mismatched chairs around a dining table are often all different or the same make and model in a multitude of colours or the same colour in different styles. Do a Houzz search and see if you can find your planned mix and if you like the look. If in doubt, get four beige and look at them for a while! You could tie the two chair colours together with little cushions on the chairs - maybe just on the two merlot ones. Georgina, you are most welcome. Yes, I saw that you said in your initial query that you had lacquered them and did not want to sand it all back, hence my suggestion for the least messy option (otherwise yes would be better to sand it all back etc etc like others have said but let's be practical not perfectionists). Yes a tinted lacquer, yes I'm sure you can buy it, I've mixed it myself but best to just buy one but beware not to go too far the other way and take tiny steps. Paint a bit that's going to be under a desk etc and leave it for days to dry and look at it in different light etc. It's not ideal, but I suggest you use the same clear lacqer and add a tiny bit of tinted one because you are painting on a darker colour already so experiment with small amounts of each, keeping track of how much you have put in. (I mix my own wall colours so have just learnt to give it a go in small portions). You also mention wanting a black and white rug, these colours will clash with the wood (colour theory) and make it look even more orange so best to use a colour that tones more. It's hard to tell the exact colour from the photos but go with warmer deeper colours which will then tone down the orange rather than clash with it and make it look cheap and more orange. So if you want to go dark then a rich chocolate brown with some creams, khaki and even a bit of burnt orange for example will make the orange in the floorboards recede.

Thanks mark so much for your kind comment. Lauren, I haven't managed to get round to it yet, but will let you know as soon as I do. Having a nightmare at the moment as found out the gable wall was dangerous so having it rebuilt at the moment, which has preoccupied me somewhat. There is no end wall on the house at the moment.
