Fireplace style advise please

We are thinking of designing a new cast stone fire surround, but would like to know the styles that people prefer. Is a very plain and simple one best, or one with clean lines with a small amount of detail, or very intricate details? Your feedback would really be appreciated please!

This might not be so helpful but I like the 2nd one from the left on all three rows. They're all classically proportioned, clean but with enough detail to add interest.

Also I think stone fireplaces are synonymous with luxury, if you're going to buy a stone fireplace it needs to have some depth and detailing. Plain ones just look quite cheap.

It is a small job but still things can go very wrong. For instance your view on a "quality" window can be different from theirs. What type of insulation? what thickness slab, what reinforcement, what are "adequate" footings? That said it is hard to get these guys to do a full specification e.g. XX brand , XX style window Xmm by Xmm. It would be well worth spending 10% of budget getting it all drawn up and fully specified. There is then less room for error. Fixing it up will be more than what you spend. That is what I would do. Unless you know these guys and are 1001% comfortable get it fully detailed! I would also follow up references they supply and view work completed. I would also get at least 2 other quotes. If you were spending £300 on a jacket you would be really careful about how it is made, finished, lined, cleaning instructions etc. And that is an item in front of you. Your view and their view may be different. Contractors can be unscrupulous so just do all the things you can to reduce risks to you. This is a lot of money for most people so take care or be willing to redo bits - a cracked slab, inadequate footings means everything comes out!. The same people can cost it again and you can compare quotes more accurately.

Hi Sian, I think the clock is great. Re the shelves its all about balance and grouping objects, so keep standing back and seeing the whole scene. Symmetry is naturally pleasing on the eye so , if you go large on the right do the same on the left, group objects in 3's,spread out the photographs, put some on the left too. Play around with candles, stacks of 3 nice covered books you like or that have some meaning to you, laid horizontally with ornaments of votives on top, try and link colours from your room onto those shelves too. The way you dress your home should tell your guests about you. Reveal hints of who you are to add depth and interest. You'll love it much more if you dress it that way too. Add a plant to one of the shelves on the other side too. It's quite fun to do, you just need a bit more to play around with here. Balance will oddly help it to seem less cluttered. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the feedback Lauren - your thoughts seems to be in line with others in that the classical look is preferred, but not so plain that it's boring. Our designer has his work cut out!
