Hello Michele Marble can look very beautiful providing it is installed and cleaned correctly. It will require more maintenance than a porcelain tile especially if you live in a hard water area as limescale can build up quite quickly, so your tiler will need to make sure the tiles are sealed. There are some very good porcelain options available nowadays which do not need so much maintenance but there is nothing quite like the real thing. Karen

For DIY bathroom renovations to save money it is possible to tile over existing tiles. You will need to score the tiles with an emery stone to give them a key. Then use a single part flexible powder adhesive as buckets of adhesive will provide sufficient adhesion. It will then be necessary to install a timber baton to the wall to provide a level line to then work up from. When tiling over tiles, things to look out for are architrave details around windows and door frames, the space behind the bath taps to ensure you can still operate them. You also need to set out the room to ensure the vertical and horizontal grout joints leave good sized cuts when the tiling reaches sanitary ware or floor and ceiling lines.

I think it's a fab idea Laura. A real wow factor adding unique personality to your home. It depends very much on the style of the bathroom and other finishes or colours present but I think it would be best to look at getting a custom piece made for the space. Also dependent on style but I would have the working of the basin on show below the unit. Embrace it as part of the design. I personally love copper or wood which I think may work well here :) Best of luck.
