What is the tiny low hedge that runs across the step? I want something similar. Mine is for a short distance- I was thinking of going with something artificial to avoid planting adjacent to the house (on the 90 deg. return).... thoughts-ideas appreciated cheers

The low hedge is English Box which is trimmed regularly to keep the low height. A perfect plant for this space.

I think Photinia would get too large and unruly for planters on top of the walls. They need managing otherwise they get very large and have a very loose form. Personally I'd opt for something that is more consistent in form and shape without too much upkeep and provides an attractive green backdrop to your beautiful house rather than competing with it for attention! Something like Buxus or Japanese box (Euonymus Green Rocket) as alternative to avoid issues with Box blight. Alternatively Privet is a good reliable evergreen hedger particular well suited to urban situations as they tolerate pollution. Either way its worth adding some water retaining granules and slow release fertiliser to the soils to give them a boost. At least you're planting at a good time to avoid stressing them in the dry summer months. Good luck!

It’s a leylandi hedge that is at the end of its life. The plants only grow at the tips and the inside is old dead wood. It is becoming wider as it appears to already have had a crown reduction so the side tips are currently the active area of growth. You have tried to reduce the width by cutting the sides hard back but the dead Underwood is now visible. This area will not regrow. The hedge does give you a good screening from the other properties around and it will be a big change removing it. However the hedge is not going to improve by further pruning so removing it will inevitably have to be done. You need to decide how much screening you wish to have when it’s gone. A fence would provide some and with layered planting in your front garden you could create a far more attractive screen. Go for it!

A continuous hedge would add to your privacy but you would need something mature or fast growing to get the benefit from in short term. I see a small hedge beside the path. Looks like box. Slow growing and disease prone so may not be the best option. I see your neighbours have what looks like a beech hedge. Beautiful year round (deciduous but leaves stay on in winter) but not very fast growing either. We planted Portuguese Laurel and, while a lovely hedge, I’ve heard since that it’s been hit by disease recently. Grisilinia is fast growing but most gardeners feel it’s like a weed! It is however the best value and fast growing I know.

I lost all my box to blight last year. I have had mixed luck with yew hedging elsewhere in the garden. I would also recommend Sarcococca sweet box (a misnamed shrub in my opinion which isn’t affected by box blight) it that flowers with fragrant small flowers in January). Photinia also makes a nice hedge with the addition of new red growth if kept well clipped. Pittosporum small leaf varieties can make an interesting informal hedge. Some varieties have leaves that develop a pink tinge when the temperatures drop. Even a variegated holly can make a super hedge if you can bear the prickles when pruning.
