Hello! I've been googling and cannot figure what this driveway material is called. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Look up Grass Pavers. There are many types of permeable pavers, but this allows grass to grow through and still able to hold vehicles. This one is concrete, but plastic versions are also available.

Waffle block pavers. My gardener and builder hated them so I didn't install. I think it's hard to grow grass in them so consider pebble or river rock.

Hi Martin, I hope your Mondays going well. We specialise in Automated Gates. Sadly we don't work in your area. However, we would strongly recommend looking for a specialist installers as incorrectly installed gates can be dangerous, to the point where many in the industry are asking the government to introduce planning permission requirements for electric gates. As far as motors go you can choose between above ground motors and below ground. Below ground motors are more expensive but as they're hidden many people find them more attractive. Above ground motors can be a cheaper option however you will be able to see them on your gate. We usually choose FAAC motors. Most trained and experienced Garden Designers would be suitable although you ought to be checking that they have Professional Indemnity Insurance. Many may also be Landscape Architects. If you go to the Society of Garden Designers website then all the Fully Registered Members have Professional Indemnity Insurance and have been carefully vetted. A Landscape Architect will be very comfortable with the structural elements but very often they are not so experienced or educated on plants as a Garden Designer. The issues with using the company doing the work to also provide a design could be that design is not their forte and perhaps that they will favour certain materials, styles, methods etc. because they often use them. This may not be an issue if you have seen their work and you like it. Here again though a worthy professional ought be carrying Professional Indemnity Insurance (Please note this is quite different from Public Liability Insurance and some people confuse the two). It would be best to speak to a few possible candidates and set a realistic budget if you can. Measure up and do some maths.

Cement plinth and new driveway

Finally finishing off the driveway and exterior of our 1930s house after renovating. The drive is going to be a warm red block paving. The picture and wall are the colours in mid painting, Plymouth grey on the wall and a dark grey on the door. I have 2 dilemmas and so many questions. The house has a cement skirt or plinth around the bottom. All the houses in the street have it and I’ve no idea what is behind or where the doc is. We have laid concrete and underfloor heating inside and removed the air bricks. The cement has cracks all over, some kind of injection holes and massive patches where the air bricks were removed. It looks dreadful but I don’t know what should be done. Can I patch it and paint it (what colour?)? Remove it and redo it (sounds expensive)? Patch it and skim it? The next issue is the step. We removed a horrid extension with a terracotta floor. When we lay the be drive I’m in 2 minds about a step. I’ve looked at regulation heights it’s a close call. Without an additional step it would be 250mm and the reg is 220mm. Can/should I ignore that and leave without a step or lower the drive and add a step at have it at 150mm. If I did that what colour/style should the step be???? Argh too many factors to consider and my husband isn’t interested and the builder is so vague!

Hi- if you are keen on gravel, it might be worth investigating gravel grids. They can be laid over tarmac and will keep the gravel in place. I used them in my own garden 5 years ago to create a base for loose laid porcelain tiles and they were dead simple to use DIY. Belgard manufactures a line of these called turfstone. Other paver manufactures probably have them too.
