Type of kitchen door

Hi all
We need some advice on kitchen door type to choose.
I was dead set against a wrapped vinyl door as our old kitchen after 7/8 years the vinyl was coming away from the cabinet. However we have seen a lovely kitchen in magnet the Newbury which is expensive with solid wood doors that are painted but I'm worried that they will scratch and the paint peel..but I'm now worried about what the best option would be to have a good quality kitchen that will endure the daily use of a family home.
Any help or advice would be welcome.

I am a fan of painted doors -- particularly as they can be changed/repainted if you wish to change your look! And easy to touch up should something happen.. But seriously, the important factors to consider are the type of paint used and the skill of the decorator. It is important to use a good undercoat, ideally matching the colour of the undercoat to the final colour of the topcoat. It is also very important to make sure that the paint can be washed and scrubbed, which is necessary in a kitchen. My decorator swears by oil-based paints for this, however I do understand that good-quality acrylic products are constantly being developed.

I have done many family kitchens with painted doors, always with great results.

I'd love to discuss all of your options with you- after all we have over 30+years in the industry combined!

I would always recommend seeing your local independents before any of the big sheds. They are extremely expensive for inferior product!

Let me know if you need any help there are many different materials and many different pros and cons of each one :)

Vinyl wrapped, acrylic faced, solid wood stained, solid wood painted, porcelain or glass fronted etc etc.

Hi John Thanks for the plan. We’ve discussed your dilemma with our in-house architect and he has some suggestions for you;  "Without knowing the layout of the garden, I assume that the large angled picture window in the kitchen looks towards a nice view and the kitchen door opens to a terrace or usable outdoor area – is this correct? If so, I suggest considering a Folding Door in the kitchen. When open, a Folding Door will provide a full width opening extending the house – and your lives – out into the garden in the summer time. Although Sliding Doors generally have fewer vertical mullions and hence more glass, a Folding Door of 2.96m wide will only require 3-panels compared with 2-panels for Sliding Door of the same width. The minor loss of visual connection would be offset by a significantly improved physical connection when the doors are open. A 3-panel Folding Door will also provide the benefit of one panel acting as a single swing door when you just want to pop in and out without opening the entire door. In the Dining room, will the door be used to access the garden often or is it more about the view? If it is about the view then a fixed picture window or Sliding Door would work. But if you like opening your house up to the garden then consider either a French Door or a 2-panel Folding Door (2L) to benefit from the full width of the opening. Aesthetically the panel sizes would be very similar and complementary to the 3-panel Folding Door in the kitchen." We hope this helps! Emily

What type of paint to use on kitchen cabinets?

Hi there! MDF is very porous so if you apply paint straight to it it dries incredibly quickly and creates a bubbled/uneven finish. I believe you need to prime it to seal it first, then sand, and then apply paint. As for types of paint, once primed and sanded I think any will do. Best of luck with the painting :)

If you haven't already decided, if you are really keen to have two types of flooring, have a break at the mid point of the island - I can see why you might want the business end of the kitchen in something different. But don't have a rug - it would be a trip hazard - and flooring comes in so many different forms that you prob should be able to find a solution that works - engineered oak is coated in a non porous finish - so if spills are mopped no prob - and tiles are easy too. I like continuing a theme so if the handles match something else then that’s good- but not essential so don’t worry if something else doesn’t match. Separately I think on a door with strong geometric lines perhaps a handle with a square rose would be a better choice.

Magnet kitchens carry either a 15 or 20 year guarantee depending on type. I wouldn't worry that the doors are going to scratch and the paint come off. That design has been around for quite some time now, and, they wouldn't be able to repeatedly sell them if they were forever replacing them under the guarantee.

We ourselves have a painted kitchen. We used car paint ( acrylic based )and bonded the paint on with a sprayer. They have not scratched and the paint hasn't come off. Therefore, if Magnet do this process professionally on a large scale i'm sure they're fine!

Just ask about the guarantee for your chosen kitchen.
