Colour Suggestions for Walls in Rented Flat

Hi!

We have the great opportunity in a new rented flat to suggest some potential wall colours but need a bit of advice!

For the kitchen, I really would like to style up the tiles put in with a bold colour, I like the dark blues popular at the moment but would the kitchen be too small and/or go with the tiles and cabinets? If not dark blue would another sort of blue or grey work? I've attached photo's of the small kitchen and a photo of the laminate flooring.

For the living room, the landlord is suggesting a pale blue grey, but I wanted to suggest a slightly darker warmer stone grey. There are going to be black fabric sofa's, but I haven't seen these so don't know how it will look! It's not a big room but looks particularly small in the picture, but does have good lighting in the day. The carpet already chosen is a textured grey.

Any thoughts?

I think a turquoise tone or mustard will work well with the grey in the kitchen and also help to tie the floor to the walls as they are warmer tones. I'd steer clear of any cold blues or greys in the living area, as I agree you'll need something warmer.

Why not take the carpet tile to the paint shop ( Valspar at B&Q is particularly good ), one with a vast range of shades, and see what works with it. I'm guessing that if you do all the donkey work, the landlord is more likely to say yes.

I think it's a shame about the row of tiles in the kitchen, as they are grey . white & black and don't really go with the warmth of the units or the floor.

You'd be better off with the mustards, sagey greens etc, warm colours that go with wood.

If it were me, i'd probably go with something like Dulux Lilylock half a grey but with a very slight hint of green to create the illusion of space, including the living room and then go with accessory colours with your utensil jars , cushiions, curtains etc

Here are some colour ideas that i feel that will go well with your ideas

Kitchen area: Paint Guide:

Dulux :grey steel 3 or 4

Farrow & Ball :Lamp room grey

Pavilion grey

if you do decide on any of the F&B range of colour make sure you the get the right base coat paint for the right colour, it brings out the right tone in the colour you want

Tile help: Bright purple or mustard/gold splash back instead of getting tiles

splash backs in kitchens areas does make the kitchen look very modern easy to maintain,very hygienic and they do come in different colours to go with the decor and could work out to be cheaper then getting tiles

Living room: Paint guide:

Blue : F&B :Blue grey FLAT MATT ( this colour looks more blue then grey)

Dulux: liberty blue 6 (can look good with grey floor)

Stone : F&B: Skimming stone

Hello Tom, I think it could be a very relaxing and inviting room - A mid century style sofa with legs would be ideal (Think mad men and stylish!) ... Something less solid and thus the feel is more open within the flooring spatially.. A 3 seater and perhaps two chairs.. Something that would work well with your chosen scheme (grey or other)... Perhaps have the sofa facing that little window wall with some chairs opposite.. So there's less of a "tunnel" You could then have a different shaped coffee table.. I'd suggest the less solid idea with any cabinetry like a console or sideboard.. Small cabinets.. Anything with legs! Even a wardrobe is a nice element in a living room.. Storage for crockery etc or the flat screen for example or projector.. Given the height, you could afford to have a larger ceiling light fitting here and why not have a look at Ebay. There are some really fantastic finds for vintage and interesting.. I'd bring the glass table out of that window recess a bit further... So it could be a multi- functioning table... Working, eating, socialising.. You may find then you don't need the other wooden table.. Chairs are other good finds on ebay or perhaps a visit to an antiques fair or two.. Mirrors could be interesting here too with the slope of the ceiling curve.. Plain and square.. if at all and hung on an angle reflects light downward.. especially good with a dark scheme... Now on to some colour... You might want to take inspiration from the rug too.. but I rather like the earthy grey or that which has brown in it.. You could introduce rust colours to compliment and then the light whiter colours for the ceiling half could be off whites and with slight yellows.. Little Greene has lovely colours.. Very chalky and dense.. For whites.. Whitening, White lead, Ceviche is nice, stone colours. Grey moss and Furrow for earthy greys. For rich grey Scree is lovely. Bring the wood work into the scheme too.. It makes for a fabulous finish.. Consider too on that rear wall (behind second sofa) a very large mirror to lean up against the wall.. Something like 8 x 6ft if you can get something sizey into the space.. Or a series of long narrow mirrors leant up against could do. If you decided to go with a dark colour this could work as it offsets the colour, bounces the light back into the room and offers a visually interesting element and spatially it makes the room twice the size whatever the size... A few ideas off the top of my head.. : ))

Hello Fiona, It looks like you have a place which could be nice with a little care. In answer to your questions: As many coats as it takes. Paint a coat, look at it when it's dry, if you can still see the paint underneath it needs another coat. Usually 2-3 coats are needed but more for covering really bright colours like that small patch of purple in the living room. I can't suggest a specific brand for another country. A folding screen / room divider would definitely work without causing problems. They are not difficult to make or you can buy one. You absolutely should not surround it on all sides without checking what it is and how much airflow it needs. Probably treated wood for outside furniture. Plastic is cheaper but doesn't look that good and can risk being blown off the terrace in high winds. Metal is more expensive and more likely to get stolen if there's a chance of that. Maybe look out for second hand stuff? Floor lamps would be the obvious choice for light. You can get cheap ones from somewhere like IKEA or again maybe second hand. This is the biggest problem you've listed. Here in the UK the laws for renting say bathrooms and kitchens need extractor fans. Perhaps check if there's a similar law there? If there isn't, you can ask the landlord if you can fit one and if you're lucky bargain for them to pay part of the cost. They are not that expensive. You probably won't convince them to help you. Those look like the remains of roots from ivy or something similar, and might be hard to get off. You could probably rent a pressure washer and do that wall and the terrace at the same time. A couple of notes on paint: - You don't need washable paint for every wall. The hall will need it, and the kitchen and bathroom (or special kitchen/bathroom paints, definitely try to get that for the bathroom) - Yes white is the cheapest colour to buy though Magnolia (yuck!) is as cheap here. White is also the worst colour to paint with as you get 'snow blind' and can't tell what you've already painted. White can also look quite cold. One thing you can do is have a painting/decorating party with your friends. You supply plenty of food and drink and they spend a few hours painting. You can get a lot done in a short time this way and it's quite fun to do. It's a lot less daunting than trying to do it all yourself.

It's hard to say. Colours change so much in light. I would expect EB to look greyer and darker in north facing rooms but you never can tell. I've got it in my hall and landing, which has south and north facing windows but the north facing one is huge and it's really quite light. I like your top 3 and would also look at dusted moss 2, it's meant to be comparable to cornforth although DM I think has a green undertone whereas cornforth is lilac. Try painting large pieces of paper (2/3 coats) and hang in each room and move them around and observe in different lights

I would suggest a radiator cover come console table. We had a radiator in our hallway that just wasn't in a convenient position but there was nowhere else to put it, so our joiner just made us an oversized cover. It's now a super useful place to pop things! We just had it made in MDF and painted it but there are loads of 'off the shelf' options. It's not actually attached to the wall, so would be no problem in a rented place :) Hope it helps! Claire

Thanks for the advice! I've gone back to the landlord suggesting a teal colour for the kitchen with the hope to pull some mustard tones with counter top accessories. And a stone grey like F&B Skimming stone for a neutral warming palate. They seem to have had positive responses so we'll have to wait and see if he paints to my request!
