Need help with pine drawers

After getting some advice here I've used Annie Sloan paint to upscale some old pine furniture I've had - I'm fairly happy with the painted sections but I was hoping to leave the top surface in pine, just cleaned up a bit. I think I've messed it up though... There were quite a lot of scratches and small chips so I've filled these in with wood filler and have sanded smooth. It's now very patchy (the filled sections sanded more than the rest) with the filler very obvious. I've no idea what to do now? Will using a pine stain work to get it back to a uniform shade of pine, followed by clear wax? If not, please help with me advice! Photo of one section, the rest is similar.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. I've decided to go with painted all white and get some funky drawer knobs to make it more interesting (it's for my little girls room).

If that were me - and I'm no expert - I'd sand the entire top flat with an orbital sander or a belt sander and reapply the finish. You have to go steady to make sure you don't create any dips in the surface where you've sanded one section too far. Someone else might have a better suggestion.

if you use a wood stain, the filled patches will take up the stain more than the wood and you will end up with darker scratches! I would paint the top in a darker colour to your main one, to co ordinate with the room you are going to use it in and either use a wax, or a Matt varnish to protect the surface. don't use a gloss varnish as this would not look good with the lovely chalky finish of the rest.

Greg think you have made a great start, just needs a few colourful statement pieces. Firstly the chest of drawers are fab, my suggestion if you like them would be to utilise them in the lounge either side of the radiator under the window, for storing what looks like cd's the other side of the fireplace in these. You could put the existing cubes either side of the two sofa's. I would ditch the rug in the lounge, and get something bold and bright such as cobalt blue with orange/yellow. In the bedroom, keep the IKEA drawers and paint them either black or dark blue and have them adjacent to each other on the back wall opposite the bed, with the TV on top as someone has already suggested. The art work is great, but would swap it over to where the mirror is and move that elsewhere. Again ditch the rug, maybe an animal skin would work well in here, keeping a masculine feel. Pick some of the colours from the artwork for a well chosen throw and cushions for the bed, and don't be afraid to use some other accessories such as vases, lamps and dare I say candles!

The mango wood with the iron base are much more interesting (otherwise you might as well keep what you have. You don't want it all too matchy matchy. Have you considered painted furniture so tone down all the wood? Totally agree regarding rug - something much much bigger to break up all the wood, more organic as it's all very boxy so far and some colour and texture ... will make the world of difference!

There are plenty of double ovens on the market. I rarely use my top oven for cooking, only for grilling bits and bobs, but mainly toast. To be honest I could manage without it but just like the thought of it being there as a back up. Warming drawers are expensive. We fitted 2 a couple of months ago for a customer (one in each housing under the ovens) and her reason for choosing them was that she didn't like microwaves. Whether or not she has used them, I don't know. They're not something I would personally cough up for. I guess it depends on how many you're cooking for on special occasions that you feel leads you to want the double oven. I cook for 8 most Christmas days and manage fine in the bottom part of my double oven. The turkey is cooked before everything else goes in and I have 3 shelves Personally I do not like to see an integrated microwave installed oven a double oven. It's too high.

I agree with Angela Keegan. Paint it all. I like the idea of painting it a slightly darker shade but even painting it the same colour as the rest would work. I find pine very garish; painting it would be stylish - whichever style you choose including shabby chic.

Agree with the above, you'll never get the filled patches to match, so paint it all. You may just get away with it if you were going for something dark, like a dark oak or Walnut followed by the same in wax, but not pine.

I would go with sanding with an orbital sander to start, with nothing coarser than 120or 150 grit, finish with a fine grit on a belt sander following the grain. Orbital sanders leave circular scratches which are visible at some angles. As an alternative you can finish by raising the grain with an abrasive filament wheel (http://www.silverlinetools.com/en-GB/Products/Power%20Tool%20Accessories/Filament%20Brushes/218250) once again folowing the grain, finish with a varnish of your choice, Danish oil, Tung oil or a good beeswax finish. If you want to change the colour of the wood (darker) then use a wood dye, everythng called a stain nowadays is some type of varnish with usually a finely powdered colour in it, quicker but limited to brilliant, satin or matt, whereas with a dye you can apply the finish of your choice. http://www.jpennyltd.co.uk/shopping/start.php?browse=1&cat=25

Be sure to mask and cover the painting below that you have already done.

If you have dents in a wood surface as opposed to scratches it is often possible to bring them out with one or two goes over with a steam iron with a piece of rag between.

DO NOT try this on varnished or French polished wood only bare.

Depending on the colour you have painted the body of the cupboard maybe you could try your tileing skills, you would not need to many tiles and the finish would look great if you could match the handles. you cold not tile the edginging and that could be painted to match the body of the cupboard. What ever you decide, have fun doing it.

If you do steam the dents out I tend to use a hot dry iron and a wet white rag.

This is an old cabinetmakers trick. It will get small dents out by swelling the wood grain. Then just give it a sand as the grain will be raised. However, if the wood grain has been cut then it will not repair the torn grain and this will show up if a stain is used.

I haven't tried this myself, but here is a link to a bloggers tutorial to paint on a faux reclaimed wood finish. I don't know how crafty you are but it might be worth trying before you resort to all white.
