Exterior house colour - help!
For the first time ever, i had a go at painting the outside of my 1930s terrace house - the challenge was, and IS more than ever - is that it's the end of the terrace with a HUGE side wall open for all the street to see from 150m away.
I got some painters in while i was away to do the job, but that happy yellow i wanted is just way too happy and is a bit of a disaster all round.
My partner is very keen for grey, but not just any grey, a dark grey.
If we were mid terrace, i might be up for it, but end of terrace with a huge, windowless, sun soaked surface to cover, I think would be worse than the current sunflower yellow.
We both want something that isn't magnolia, and that will contrast with the white border base but i've lost my confidence in making a decision now seeing how difficult that huge wall is.
Perhaps a lighter grey? Heather?
See pics below, including a crude mock up i did with the idea of a grey front, and a white border on the side to seperate the grey from the incandesent yellow on the side, with the view of not redoing the entire side wall.
I think i'm going to have to do the front & the side, not sure that border idea is a good one.
Any suggestions will be greatfully received.

Comments (12)I would agree with the previous comments and suggest the following; 1. If DIY confident pick a nice masonry paint colour ( fan of Dulux cobblestone) and paint house brick front and side including side of steps. Paint railings. 2. Purchase two/three garden trellis and cut to size, paint with same colour masonry paint and place around step structure. Plant a few evergreen creepers in front to soften and add colour. 3. Dig a planting area perpendicular to house along driveway from trellis to front entrance and plant with a low evergreen hedge such as box hedging or a mix of box with grasses. 4. Repair lawn. 5. Comments (21)I would suggest as others have, a bigger porch, will allow you more storage as well,particularly when it's wet outside. Also, perhaps render or paint the extension and porch to tie them together, but to do the whole thing might be too blocky and monolithic. Do the windows work for you from the inside? You might find that if, for example, you do the porch and extension in white, the windows aren't so obvious. If they don't work for you, look at making them larger and more symmetrical. 7 years agoAgree the grey looks lovely - I'm not a fan of the yellow I'm afraid. I used Shaded White - Farrow and Ball on our new build recently. Photos attached. I also used Mizzle (Farrow and Ball) on an annex and it looks great. Both colours will change depending on the time of day and the light available. Mizzle ranging from soft green, grey to white. Shaded white from pale grey to a soft creamy white. Very happy with both.
